What is "V-shaped" EQ'ing?! What's being cut and boosted? (pg. 2)

Sounds like utter nonsense to me. Eq will always vary on every mix and you can never use a single all purpose Eq shape for every mix.
Secondly, to increase the attack of a sound you do it with an amplifier attack envelope. Not with an Eq. A boost on an Eq around 125hz will just make a bass drum more bassy. The same boost on the entire mix is more than likely just going to muddy the entire mix.
Time and time again I just have to point out what Steve has already mentioned - if you record everything properly, cut all the samples properly - the song will mix itself. A good mixdown doesnt need a whole lot of post EQ to make it tonally homogenous and excessive Eq is more than likely just going to make several instruments sound unnatural.
It doesnt help that most Eqs on the market are total e and I would never use them regardless. Even those Waves linear phase Eqs suck donkey balls. The only Eq I have ever used that didnt totally kill the sounds I was building is Voxengo Gliss Eq and the effect is subtle. The boost and cut range is limited to +/- 15 dB and I wouldnt advise ever making cuts or boosts in excess of 6 dB. If you have to do that you recorded/mixed the whole thing inappropriately. Solution. Remix/Rerecord the offending instruments. Dont stick a bloody great Eq shape on everything which will probably make the entire mix sound horribly unnatural.
There should never be a situation where you use a preset Eq shape. NEVER. Eq is still to my mind best used sparingly and I try to avoid using it at all where possible. Same with compression. If you find yourself using those tools alot, you didnt record your sounds properly. You didnt pick the right samples and/or you didnt mix them in the appropriate proportions.
Am I the only person that thinks all this advise on Eqing is not only wrong but actually detrimental to your productions if you start thinking of Eq in terms of preset waveshapes? and in terms of fixing poor recordings and poor choice of sounds in the first place? |

I'm trying to figure out what you mean by things sounding "unnatural" when you are referring to electronic music?
I don't typically have issues recording natural acoustic synthesizers. |

Stick both fingers in your ears. Listen to the sound of the outside world. That doesnt sound natural because having 2 lumps of skin and bone plugging your ear drum will attenuate alot of high frequency sound.
Listen to the sound of a trance tune outside of a club. Doesnt sound right does it? Thats because of the layers of concrete and brickwork comprising the exterior of the club. Again, attenuating high and upper midrange frequency.
This does not even take into account those instruments that are modelled on real world sounds. Hi hats, snare drums, even synthesized bass drums are still modelled on real drums. Synthesized string pads are still modelled on string vibration via bowing. Some are more successful at recreating the source than others. But *all* of them have a very very specific spread of frequency at very specific intevals at very specific amplitude peaks.
Changing those peaks via an Eq is one way of making them sound unlike the source they were modelled on. At the end of the day a well produced dance record still sounds as if all its composite elements are arranged in a physical space. Otherwise it sounds 'unnatural.' The only way I can articulate that is to just take your favourite 5.1 mix and sum it to mono and marvel at how totally flat and 2 dimensional it sounds.
Also bear in mind that using additive Eq or a filter with an extremely high Q value, you can actually change the fundamental frequency of the instrument. That definitely sounds weird. |

And what exactly are you trying to tell us? That you are a NASA scientist or a music producer?

Haha i was going to say. I think you need to stop telling us what you know about everything and stay on topic.
About the natural thing, dont you think there is no such thing as a natural sound. Its more just to do with what fits and what doesnt. Think of all the different genres and how each can use the most abstract of elements. |

That was essentially my point... but I understand what you're saying, Derivative. :) |

Hardly. It doesnt take an engineering degree and 5+ years work in related fields to know that bad Eqs ing suck. |

Maybe not, but i promise that what you just said, that "bad Eqs ing suck", will more people understand, insted of all load of crap thats metioned above. You are probobly right what you are saying, but not all us have a major in english. For me it was just confusing:crazy:
But i cant say there is many "natrual" sounds in a club track, just a load of tweaked 1 and 0īs. How you want them to sound is personal taste, and how every sound fits the track. |

V-Shaped EQing is nothing more than boosting your lows and highs, and cutting your mids, to an extreme amount.
In clubs, this is sometimes done (though it's also common to see lows and mids boosted, highs cut) to entire tracks or sets.
For the producer, this can be done to single instruments that have wide spectrums, in order to give it a very powerful and distinct sound. It almost washes over the entire mix...
An example would be Kyau vs Albert - Made of Sun
That pad that just seems to wash over everything like liquid - it is V-Shape EQed to the *extreme*.
In most cases you won't have to, or wnat to, use this method... it's fairly antequated, 90-99 type stuff (modeled after a famous pair of yamaha's that we all know is a pos in modern times!), but sometimes it's just the sound you need and want to make your track just right, so usually you can just play around with your EQ until you find something that satisfies you and works in the mix. |

Are you seriously being this big of an asshat?
The guy is giving out free information, and detailed and well arranged, and you're basically saying, "No, no, stop! I just want a summary using words under 6 letters."
Not only are you rude, but you have a lot of balls for even considering throwing in your opinion of such an off-topic complaint just to complain.
Next time, how about you keep your bull whining to yourself, and contribute to the thread and the original question? Thanks. |

And i wasnt trying to be a jerk, i was just messing with him. but i seems that peoplle like you cant take that. So im sorry if i offended anyone.;)
Anyway, i had a laugh!
