Steve Angello... Disappointment.

he had a gig in slovenia yesterday. because the event was free and because i like some of his productions and sets (mixmag, mos sessions...) i thought i'd give it a try. his mixing was almost flawless but musically, it seems, i was expecting a bit too much. i thought i'd hear some fresh/unreleased/unknown tunes but instead listened to tracks i already know or i'm fed up with them. amongst others he played: love walking away, ian carey & mochito, eurythmics (ok, i tollerate that he plays his productions, but why the old and overplayed stuff steve?) i was hoping to hear "otherwise then" and "sexy " on a big sound system but no, instead i got: rune - calabria and tomaz & filterheadz - sunshine. i left before he finished because i was afraid he would play "till west - same man" and "loleatta holloway - love sensation 06". if this would happen i would regret that i spent the money for the drive and didn't stay home watching the MTV dancefloor chart.

why does he do that? an artist of his caliber could play anything he wants and obviously this would be new, bangin(or not) tunes, not old and overplayed ones... the event organizers imo book superstars because they want to make the event special, in between other things that people could dance to music they can't hear just about everywhere or from any other local dj.

what are your thoughts on this?

Totally understand where your coming from, and i agree to some extent. Its probably pressure from the promoter/club to get the crowds in, so play the well-known house anthems to attract them.

Same issue happens with a lot of DJs, here in England, the likes of Judge Jules and Dave Pearce have good technical skills in my opinion (no matter what bashers say) but they choose to play over-hyped 'dance anthems' which send 90% of the noobs in the crowd crazy, and the 10% dedicated hard-core fans are left dissapointed.

Its not like they don't get promos :haha: Jules has been caning Team SR - Leaving London exclusively for months before others got onto the act.

srsly... 5.6 mm?

:p

about your question... he played for the masses... if you say it was free gig, i'm sure a lot of music noobs were there... he knew it as well, if he would play less known, more "underground" tracks he could be missunderstood by audience :wtf:

:D

i know exactly what you mean but there were mainly party people from which you could see that they wanted more. and filterheadz isn't exactly mainstream... and the local dj who played before him, played exclusively underground and the people went nutz.

He needs to step up his track selection BIG TIME!!!

You were wrong to expect anything decent from Angello in the first place.

His sets have always been pretty bad.

I liked the Angello & Ingrosso EM from last year the first time I heard it. But that was only because I hadn't really been exposed to electro tech house too much and it was all new to me. Then upon second listen I realized how shallow that set was.

From then on I've tried a couple other solo Angello sets and they never were really good at all.
