I blame the irregular ortography of the English language. Don't even try to blame on the speakers, when it's far from being their fault
Really, "their", "they're" and "there" have the same sounds - what kind of efficient writing system do you think allows such confusions? |
I always hear/say a difference between there and they're. |

I stand corrected: In some dialects, the words "there" and "their" do have a glide that doesn't exist in "they're", but the three words are homophones in other regions :)
Still, "their" and "there" are homophones in most (if not all) varieties of English I know of (and strangely rhyme with "air"), so there is something wrong with the writing system. Actually, even the world "varieties" is bizarre: "ie" has two completely different sounds in the same word :p |

The USSR's launch of Sputnik spurred the United States to create the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in February 1958 to regain a technological lead. ARPA created the Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO) to further the research of the Semi Automatic Ground Environment program, which had networked country-wide radar systems together for the first time.

And still, people who learn it as a second language rarely make those mistakes. I've noticed that confusion between words like their/there/they're is almost exclusive to native speakers.
amirite? ;) |
