and now i may ask what is a torrent ? |
Nerdy downloading peripheral in which someone uploads a file to a database and "seeds" the file (meaning keep the program open so someone can download it from them). When more and more people download the file they are supposed to leave the program open so that they can help "seed" the file to other "leechers". During the download while you're "leeching" depending upon the number of people downloading as well you may "seed" the parts of the file you have downloaded to other people.
Most torrent sites have a download/upload ratio in which if you are found downloading far more than you're uploading you will eventually be banned because of a low ratio. It is considered common courtesy to seed a file until you match the size of the file at least, if not more. Seeding and having more seeders helps the downloads go faster as there are more people to pull the file from. Any bans from download sites are generally IP bans.
And that's about all I have. I hope I'm not awful at explaining that , if I am just google it, or better yet, wikipedia it. |

Essentially, TheMixingBowl started as an archive for both old and new BBC shows to make them available to all interested people (for example to have all "The Essential Mix" sets available from the year 1993 onwards when it all started - and in fact, TheMixingBowl succeeded here - the site has all the around 700 Essential Mixes from 1993-2006). Another example is "Armin van Buuren - A State of Trance", TheMixingbowl has all episodes except ASOT 229 (which is commercially available on CD so that it is not allowed to distribute it).
TheMixingbowl does not allow to upload and to distribute commercially available music (albums, vinyls, etc.)- only radio and live sets and other non-commercial material is allowed there.
Between 30-50 very new (in part 0-day releases) and older radio and live sets are added to the site each day, especially EDM but not limited to EDM... Just yesterday a Kraftwerk set from 1975 was added to the site... The site also encourages its members to produce own sets and to upload them ... In the same sense, the TMB sees itself as a platform to allow not-so-well-known DJ's to present their sets to the public plus -of course- the normal well-established DJ's such as Armin van Buuren, Sasha, Digweed, Zabiela and others.
With all these intentions (considered to be positive!) in mind you can roughly imagine what happened when the BPI (the british counterpart of the RIAA) asked TMB to shut down because the site was considered to distribute illegal bootlegs (all recorded live-sets and radio shows are considered to be bootlegs by the BPI, RIAA, IFPI, and other music industry organizations).
TMB internally that resulted in a storm against the industry associations with following arguments: "Industry does not want diversity, they want a few artificial DJ blockbusters (money-making best-sellers) and no music diversity because that reduces the impact of their blockbusters". "They fight genre diversity and DJ diversity". "What we do is promotion for the music and for DJs". "Industry wants to monopolize music and we listeners don't get the music we want to listen to - without a site such as TMB". And so on with lots of similar arguments.
Finally at the end, TMB decided to go back online. |

At the moment, yes. Unfortunately.
The limit will be lifted soon. Hopefully. |

Just a quick update:
TheMixingBowl.Org is open again for signups for everyone and now without the 20000 members limit (but there might still be a limit at higher numbers).
