Tired of bouncers and attitude at New York clubs? Check out the BAPLab Festival in Brooklyn this weekend for a sampling of artists on Ghostly, Spectral and M_nus.
New York's Bushwick Art Project (BAP) is a collective dedicated to the promotion of electronic music, new media, and digital art. According to organisers, latest venture BAPLab is a "festival of ideas" where they hope artists can explore new paths through a program of electronic music, video, sound installations and interactive works. BAPLab takes place this weekend from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning and features a diverse program that should satisfy both the IDM noodlers and clubbers wanting to take a break from their usual Saturday night superclub routine.
Held at 3rd Ward, the festival will feature cerebral offerings like Douglas Henderson's sound installation 'Untitled 2004': a line of four 12" woofers painted to resemble a swimming pool and filled with water. Based on the sonic frequencies, patterns are generated on the surface of the water resulting in "music made to be seen, not heard". OK, not everyone's idea of a big night out but beats waiting in a line for fifty minutes outside Crobar, right?
After midnight the festival switches into club mode (minus the table service) with more energetic DJ and live sets from artists including Lusine [Ghostly], Most Wanted RA podcaster Ryan Elliott [Spectral], Ryan Crosson [M_nus/Trapez], Hakan Libdo [Force Tracks] and NYC Robots member Nick AC.
The BAPLab festival takes place this weekend at 3rd Ward, Brooklyn in NYC from 4:00 p.m on Saturday July 22 to 6:00 a.m. Sunday, July 23. Entry will only set you back a tenner. |

this party was siiiiiiiiiiiiiick
tried to get there around midnight, but took the 6 train to the L train and found out that the L train wasn't running
so went back home and got directions and had to ask 2 taxi's whether they would take me brooklyn - finally the 3rd cabbie said yes - so got there around 12:45 am or so.
the place was HUGE - three floors with cool art, places to sit, smoke etc. it was definitely a nice change of pace and refreshing to go party at a warehouse instead of a club - this was definitely ot the cookie cutter club night - the biggest complaint (of course i have to have one!) was that the bathroom situation sucked big time - none of them were working so i decided not to drink anything at all.
enjoyed insideout & camea - dark and dirty and then ryan elliot was good - he had some technical problems (at least i hope they were technical problems ) and then went into the other room - don't even know who was doing the live pa in that room but it was rockin......totally hottttttttttttttt party..........but the lack of water made my legs cramp from dancing so i had to leave around 4 am or so.......wish i could have stayed longer, but can't wait for the next party. best part of the party - no ing smoke machine!!!!!!!! just stripped down warehouse where the music took center stage.
oh yeah - the visuals were cool as too - LOVED the fusion of art and techno throughout the place - |
