thats a common misconception. for the most part beauty isn't subjective. There are universally accepted characteristics of beauty.

Although this is true (as there were those tests made with babies and whatnot), there's a great deal of subjective judgement on whether you find someone "beautiful", and here's why:

One should roughly know where one falls in the scale of beauty. For example, I would rate myself a 5 (average). I'm nothing to look at but I'm not ugly. I have good skin and teeth, i'm not over weight, good proportions, and well cut features. I could use more muscle tone and my face could be more symmetrical. Whether your personality can overcome your physical short comings is another story. We size up the opposite sex in the the first few seconds we meet, to deny that wouldn't be honest.

Sure, there are a few traits that are more commonly regarded as "beautiful" (i.e. not many of us would find that guy posted by jrbuddha beautiful... or even cute, for that matter :p). However, if you're infatuated with someone, this person will look a lot more attractive (i.e. beautiful) than if you weren't. The more negative characteristics a person reminds you of, the uglier you'll think they are (and vice-versa).

I dunno, one of my epiphany moments was when I was at a friend's house and their niece was there playing with dolls. I think she was 7-10 years old, and her face glowed with happiness.

But she was hideous. Not unnattractive. Not an ugly duckling who was going to turn into a swan. She was hideous. And all I could think about was puberty was just around the corner and it was going to hit her like a truck and that there was nothing I could do to protect her.

For some reason, every American teenage sitcom has the "ugly redhaired". I find them stunning! Also, some individuals are not considered beautiful in their homeland, but once they go to a foreign country, the natives think these individuals are attractive.

I know for a fact I'm more popular with Russian girls than with the locals, for example :p

I'm an expert at female beauty :D

I would note the following general rule.
Every race has a different beauty path, as well as both sexes.

Take a random 40 year old womand stand her next to her 20 year old daughter.

Likewise asian women retain their beauty longer than other races (which implies that in general female beauty is skewed towards youth).

Also many women have a camel approach to beauty, where they have 2 peaks where their looks are maximized. Russians for instance seem to have a maximum around age 25 where they have the perfect balance between being a beautiful woman without being "old".

Every cell in the human body gets replaced over the course of seven years, it has been argued that with the right amount of willpower one can change their looks!
