What is your favorite DJ "trick"?

It can be using a combo of effects or mixing techniques...whatever. Mine's kinda simple but works well. I loop sample with a heavy echo effect towards the end of a buildup, fading it in until it's like a wall of sound, then I kill it right when the beat starts up again.

Anyone else willing to share something out of their bag o' tricks?

Effects....pfft...sure, if you wanna learn technical jibberjabber and spend all that time practicing, Mr. "By The Book" DJ Guy.

Between photo shoots and cocaine binges, I have little time to hone my craft so I found another road to stardom.

Two words: Jesus Pose

Got into a rough mix? Distract the crowd by posing.

Blends out of key? Pose.

I try to average about 30 Jesus Poses per hour myself...it works for me.

You should just go in & out of them on every other beat for an entire gig. Fk mixing. Just loop Traffic for 2 hours.

After those 2 hours, you can officially strap me in a straight jacket in a padded room... :p

Haha, thanks for the contributions fellas... :toothless

Aquarian
Manual delays. Cue up an identical copy of the same record on another deck but cue it exactly one beat before the main deck. Then when you want to create the echo effect at the end of a melody or vocal, quickly shift the fader towards the middle for a brief second and then back to it's original position.

When I read that I thought you were going to express the same views on it as I have... but then you didn't :p

I strongly recommend NOT thinking of doing things technically in terms of learning this trick, learning that trick etc... you'll get a lot further and find you can be a lot more creative if you don't think of tricks as being separate things you can be learnt, but just play around and think of different ways you can use the equipment and the music.

But that I don't necessarily mean "work them out for yourself", more just try and move away from the idea of tricks being individual things where you say "I'm gonna do this trick now" and move into a state of just considering the music as tools that can be arranged and manipulated in any way you like...

If you get what I mean :p it's kinda like reaching enlightenment in technical mixing lol, you only really understand the concept when you actually think like that
