cubase has stumped me this time... help please

i was playing round on a rmx yesterday using my controller keyboard to record some midi trax for it.

i then noticed there was a lag between when i pressed the key and when i hear sound. a half second lag.

i thought maybe the midi channel was dodgy so removed it and re inserted a new one... same thing happens.. changeing attack of synths doesnt work.

trying other channels in the piece also shows the same thing.

then i opened a previous track i made and everything is fine..

so i know a parameter on that particular project file has changed somehow...

can someone help cos i been searching hrough all the options, and latency doesnt seem like the reason... i can find the culprit..

cheers

rich this happens to me in sx3 whenever I actually change my asio card. Direct sound has a huge lag in cubase, and their drivers suck, ASIO4ALL fixes this problem. But if you didn't do this, I don't know what you did. I'll think about it a little for you. Very interesting! I've been using ableton as my go to lately, so I need to dust off my sx3, which frankly I don't use much, because it's too deep. Ableton's a toy, and I'm simple minded :)

At first this sounds like a latency issue but since you said you open another track and this does not happen, I'm not sure then. I would say attack but you've already tried that. What soundcard are you using and what is your latency? What version of SX?

thanx for the replies guys.. shame its not so easy to diagnose...

my soundcard is the m audio - 2496

latency is 386 (or around 380- cant remember exact)

the version is sl-2.0 (so same age/congig as sx-2.0)

hope you can help..:)

it is easy to diagnose, who the hell sets their latency to 380ms, no wonder you have lag.

word, I mean.. when I start making a track I most often start with 512, and as I add more and more stuff to the track I sooner or later have to change to 2048 for it to run smoothly.

256 samples standard here. (which corresponds to a 5ms latency or something). No problems at all.

fact is it is nothing to do with the latency, my trackis very early with only a few synths etc..

why are my previous tracks with 300% more going on not have a lagging issue?

if the latency was set to this figure by the guys who configured the system then this should be fine...?

Fact is it should have something to do with latency because what latency does is delaying the sound signal so the computer has time to calculate the actual sound. Anyway doesn't there ring a bell if you're talking about a half a second lag and your latency is set to approx 0.4seconds latency?

This latency you're talking about should be directly related to the output latency your soundcard is set to.

However the different response time between projects is very strange, that shouldn't be happening... I'm sorry but if the latency isn't it I can't help you.

I dont use cubase, but here is a possibilty of what might be causing the problem.

Bottom right of rmx is a setting for MIDI controllers. It should be set to immedate.Other options it could be set to are, Next 16th, Next Beat, or Next Bar.

Hope that helps!

hmm.. if ur comp is reasonablely powerful, cant u adjust the latency timing?

My audigy 2 soundcard is running at 7 ms
Synchronicity
Even though I don't know the card, I'm pretty sure that figure will be samples not ms.

Otherwise it would be a bit more than a half second delay:D Like Rich says - the soundcard's latency will be the same for each project as well.

So you can rule out audio card settings and concentrate on the project itself.

Errm...
