go about finding new music from artists you've never heard of before, or just generally keep up to date on what's out there?

Whenever I actually go to a record store, I try to listen to a lot of new stuff, but it's frustrating at times and because of poor sorting I end up "wasting" time on a lot of really bad trance or generic deep house. Other than whatever I may be lucky enough to stumble on like that, it's just the occasional song I hear in a livesest and actually look up instead of just being lazy.

I guess I could just go about looking up tracklistings and DJ's top-10 charts and stuff like that, but that always makes me feel like I'm months behind. It doesn't help either that I currently only have turntables, so digital releases are of limited use besides just listening at the moment. Damn I need to get CD decks or Ableton or something.

I rape tracklists and try to listen to as much stuff as possible from online stores. It is still tough though but where I live if I'm playing a track that is maybe 6 months old I'm still playing it before any other DJ in town. I have a bad habit of going through people's sets and looking up every song in their tracklist online at shops and listening to them individually but never actually listening to their set.

I suppose online stores are a good place because you don't have to worry about someone having taken the last copy right before you got there, preventing you from knowing the song even existed.

And I used to do about the same thing, Zild. Just went on soulseek and downloaded everything I could find off of Digweed/Cattaneo/Zabiela/Kleinenberg etc tracklists without even listening to the mixes, and then going and buying the ones I liked the most when they got released. It's bad, I know, but effective.

And I was poking around a bit, and stumbled back across the Global Underground message board. Most of the people who post on that board are asshats that not even Dave and Packer can rival, but there's a TON of music info, especially for british and european stuff, on that site.

Guess I just gotta make more time for it and ignore that nagging feeling that I'm cheating.

I always pay for my music which is another setback I have. I probably have 50 - 100 tracks in crates across cyberspace waiting for me to get some cash. And man there is no such thing as cheating.

I'm on that board and I'm an asshat, so he speaks truth. :o

I rip from other sets and steal music off of Kazaa.

You're selling us short then, Jotz.

I pay for anything that I really like or seriously intend to play, and the 192kbps you find on soulseek isn't high enough quality to play on a serious system anyway. I just end up either really poor or not buying very much music. As much as I love my vinyl and will never get rid of it, that's a big part of why I want to start in with Ableton or CD decks. $1-2 for digital music is a livesaver compared to $12-15 for vinyl.

www.bleep.com

Great site for labels like Audiomatique, SOMA and Wagon Repair.

I don't really like to use filesharing programs, but the most efficient method I've found for myself and my tastes is to just browse the entire Audiojelly.com database for their trance artists and d/l the ones I like. -I'm on M at the moment (a-z) and have burned about 4-5 cds since (not like anybody cares though)
seekrets
let me see i get recent sets from tribalmixes.com...........have a network thing going on at soulseek....and have friends thats hook me up :D And search search search........
