Terminology

Is there anyone in the CORe who knows what this means? Librarians, perhaps?

A professor of my girlfriend's dragged her into some sort of post-graduate Terminology course and now she's not doing well because she doesn't speak either Spanish or English (there are no useful books in Portuguese).

Then, she asked me to help her, but I can't understand the texts - they all expect the reader to know something I don't.

:conf:

terminology is basically a big word used to talk about which words have been used.

i dont quite know what more we can say?

Yup, an off the top definition is: The set of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.) commonly used in or when describing a particular field. For example, baseball terminology would include things like fastball, slide, out of the park, etc, while hospital terminology would include things like sedate, hypodermic, suppository, and stat.

What you wrote does make sense, but there's a whole discipline that seems to come out of it, and that's what I can't understand.

That's why I asked for librarians - the damn book talks about cognitive processes that are just too confusing, getting all complicated with concepts, terms and processes that are far from being intuitive, even though I do know what a cognitive process is (which should be a start :p)

Slap Maaz with a dictionary... even if it's not gonna help ... or will it?
Mystery mysterious!

Here's what the Oxford dictionary on my cellphone has to say about
TERMINOLOGY:

1. The specialized vocabulary and expressions used in a particular field or subject; nomenclature. [the termonology of economics]
2. The study of such vocabulary and verbal usages.

Forms: terminological; terminologically ( wow that's an impressively modern word :p ); terminologist
The 3am Junkie
TA & librarian? doesn't seem too common. Most guys seem to be in tech related jobs.

Actually, I should've made myself more clear: I do understand the meaning of the word - the problem is the amount of theory behind it.

For example, a dictionary can easily tell us what psychology is (the scientific study of the way the human mind works and how it influences behaviour, or the influence of a particular person's character on their behaviour), but the problem begins when a psychologist starts telling you about their methods, concepts and whatnot.

As I said, this is a whole post-graduate course that's been giving us headache :p

in psychology we call them constructs. They are just made up words commonly used to describe something. :)

Google is being a two dollar hooker with the info it's giving me but this seems to be a little more descriptive of a terminologists job:

Also it appears a lot of terminologists are involved in the translation work field.

SOrry I am at a dead end here. I found the last page on the interweb and it's not helping me :(

Terminology, in its general sense, simply refers to the usage and study of terms, that is to say words and compound words generally used in specific contexts.

Terminology also refers to a more formal discipline which systematically studies of the labelling or designating of concepts particular to one or more subject fields or domains of human activity, through research and analysis of terms in context, for the purpose of documenting and promoting correct usage. This study can be limited to one language or can cover more than one language at the same time (multilingual terminology, bilingual terminology, and so forth).

Yeah, both jdat and gwmarines are quite close to what I'm looking for (I'm reading that article more carefully now - it gives some of the information I was looking for). Thanks guys.

Actually, I'm impressed at gwmarines' post: do you guys work with terminology there?
