Wanting to revive the Indiana EDM scene...

I'm going to be a freshman at IU this fall and I'm wanting to organize an event this fall near Bloomington, IN as there is still some (small) interest in EDM at IU, but being one of the biggest party schools in the country I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to draw in a crowd. Everyone I've talked to has been supportive of the idea, but I have no idea how to organize this. I figure our best bet would be find a large building out in the country (shouldn't be hard, Indiana is 95% farmland), and I know a few people who could hook us up with sound equipment/lights. I'd have to find a few DJs in the area who could spin for the evening, but my main concern is, is it legal to hold a huge event like this and do I need to get some kind of permit? I really think this could spark some interest as I'm sure a lot of students from IU (as well as TAs on here!) would come.

So what are some other concerns that I should know about organizing something like this, and am I getting in over my head trying to do this? :conf:

I think it might be better to organize closer to the city, not on a farm. See if there's a large hall, or some sort of auditorium that isn't being used. (I just dont want to get lost in Indiana somewhere and get picked up by the 5-0 on a dirt road at 2 am trying to find a barn)

We would certainly be interested in playing something like that.

PM Phreek. TA Addiction @ Purdue was a blast. Good luck with the event, I think you should definitely go for it.

Good call, I'm sure there is a building somewhere on the campus that could be used. I was thinking about the farm idea because it'd be farther out where playing music till 5-6am wouldn't be much of an issue. Then again, people who aren't familiar with the area would probably have a hard time finding the place.

Where was the TA event at Purdue held?

Yeah, the only reason I brought that up is that I attended a bunch of outdoor psy-trance events held out in the boonies back in 2005 and i got lost plenty of times. plenty.

It was a bit off campus in LaFayette...ahhhhh, sorry that HeadOn commercial from my sig is on TV again!!!...Sorry, anyway it was in a rented space in the back of a bar/banquet place. Had a bit of a warehouse feel to it and they brought in a great sound & lighting system. I'll see if I can find some pics...

Here's the review thread from Addiction 1 @ Purdue

Wow, what a blast from the past. Rob had a different TA name, had yet to meet the infamous Robert Hillman and got to play (trance) in the middle of what would become a Hamptons sandwich. :D Oh, and just to relive some good memories, beware, Charley, when the Bloc grabs our last track in Appleton next weekend ;)

AWESOME! It's going to be fun reading through the thread and hopefully I can get some ideas so we can make this IU event happen!

I will be a senior at DePauw next year. I live just north of Indianapolis. I play out a fair amount around Indy. I am a part of Progress Event. We are a promotional company and throw events. We would love to hear your thoughts and talk about your ideas and help out.

Judging by what I've read so far in the Addiction '05 thread, it sounds like you are an awesome DJ :) I've never thrown an event like this so I have no idea what to expect for cost (DJs, promotion, how much equipment is required, rental costs, though building rental cost would vary I'm sure). Overall, what is the usual cost for events like this?

You're in luck dude. The MWTAs around here know how to throw a damn good party (from what i've heard.)

I hope to find out for myself next weekend :p
