question regarding signal chain
View this Thread in Original format

I have Xone:32, which only has an effects out. If I go from the mixer to, say, an EFX-1000, and then from the EFX to my monitors, will there be any noticeable sound quality loss? This would just be for bedroom DJing...

No because on the efx 1000 there is a bypass switch .
The signal does not get processed.
When you want to effect you turn that switch off.
This is only on the 1000 not the 500

every connection degrades the sound unless it is wholey digital...

even if bipassed the connection points will degrade the signal (if analog)
I'm geussing it is mostly redundant.. especially for bedroom djing.

Theoretically yes this is true.
But the fact is that the signal bupasses the converters altogether and remains in the analog stage.

So:
CASE ONE :

---------
Amp/speakers
^
|
-Holes for your speaker cable/Analog stage.

^
|

-24 BIT D/A converters.
^
|
-circuits various efx software/ at 32 BIT.
^
|

- 24 BIT A/D Converterers ( BUPASS IS OFF)

^
|
-Holes for your speaker cable-analog stage.
^
|

XONE

-------
In the above case the signal gets digitized and there will be a slight moderate deterioration in quality because let's face it the EFX 1000 sounds pretty good, its 24 bit 96k at 32 bit processing which means there is plenty of room for rounding errors but you wont find pro converter AK5393vsp chips like you will find in the TC Electronics Finalizer or the TC electonics world class 6000$ suround capable reverb unit ;)
So you could argue that you loose some of the 'finesse' of the sound...

But in...
CASE 2:

(BUPASS IS ON -A/D Converterers -various efx software -D/A converters get bupased)
-----------
-Amp speakers
^
|
-Holes for your speaker cable/Analog stage.

xone
If you bupass the converters your signal remains in the analog stage.
Since the Efx1000 is fairly transparent and promises Low impedance, 19db high headroom, 0,005 THD and a high S/N ratio unless you have the hearing of a dog and you are rocking a pair of genelec 1032s you should not sense a degrade in sound quality...

My 2 cents...

Why don't you go from the aux into a channel?

Not when you lower the dry channel. That's how I run the EFX-500 on my 92. Well, into the return, but, same principle. It's more versatile if you can effect an individual channel.

But, then again, it doesn't really matter on the 1000, since you can bypass it. I would never run the 500 on my master, though, the sound quality would be terrible.

That is the difference yours has a return section ;)

Yeah, but it really is just another channel. It works the same way. You just can't assign the crossfader to it.
