The Bush administration may have broken over two dozen federal laws and regulations -- some of them multiple times -- according to an unreleased report from the House Judiciary Committee Democrats.
"The misconduct I have found is not only serious, but widespread," reads a draft summary of the report by Ranking Member John Conyers (D-MI):
The laws implicated by the Administration’s actions include federal laws against making false statements to congress [sic]; federal laws and international treaties prohibiting torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; federal laws concerning retaliating against witnesses and other government employees; Executive Orders concerning leaking and other misuse of intelligence; federal regulations and ethical requirements governing conflicts of interest; the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act; communications privacy laws; the National Security Act; and the Fourth Amendment.
The document, an update to the Democrats' December 2005 report, "A Constitution in Crisis," will be released later this week, according to knowledgeable sources. It is several hundred pages long, with over a thousand footnotes.
In earlier days such a report would be easily ignored. But with the looming possibility of Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives in November, Conyers' charges pose a potentially serious threat to the Bush administration. After all, it takes only a simple majority vote in the House to impeach a sitting president.
On their face, the laundry list of alleged wrongs form a natural basis for impeachment proceedings -- but Conyers has insisted he has no intention of rushing to impeach. No, a slow walk to possible impeachment (preferably down a path that includes months of hearings) is more what the would-be chairman envisions, he has said.

By Sher Zieve – Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) is said to believe that the Democrats will retake the US House of Representatives in November 2006. As one of his first acts, he has announced that he plans to work toward the impeachment of President Bush.
Conyers, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, is reported to be preparing Articles of Impeachment against the president. He has also introduced House Resolution 635, which begins an investigation into the Bush Administration for potential impeachable offenses.

article 635 does not begin the process of impeachment. it only proposes a vote. a vote to select a committee. a committee to investigate charges. charges (hopefully) then to find articles of impeachment.
whats pretty clear is your rush to freak out. but your right. it kinda is a draft.
if "officially on the table" really existed we'd know those articles of impeachment. Conyers is just hoping for the best this Nov. |

I believe proposing a vote is beginning the process and making it an option on the table. In this case I'm an optimist. |

sorry for being a dick.
the vote, to me, just represents more of the same donkey party crap. "it's crunch time, lets see how much of this we throw sticks". he knows the vote goes nowhere in the event of a Donkey party takover bid failure, but there is really nothing to lose in any event.
Conyers is gonna be real disappointed this election year. |

The talk of impeachment gets no one nowhere. Conyers may have a threat or two in him, but overall I doubt it will get somewhere EVEN IF the Dems. take back the House/Senate/both. I would just appreciate a little Legislative oversight, something that has seriously been lacking over the past 5 years.
And that goes for if a Democratic president is in office. I feel that the best government is one that has checks and balances not just between the 3 branches, but between the 2 presiding parties. Discussions and compromises are reached rather than 1 party railroading it's ideology down our throats. So if a Democratic president is elected in '08, I wouldn't be too upset at all if the Republicans control Congress.
This whole talk of impeachment has been overdone since the Clinton years. I would just prefer some good oversight. |
