SA geeze.
First let's clarify. The issue isn't pro-choice. The issue is euthanasia.
As a classic anthropological comparison with the historical Inuit they respected their elders up until the point that they could not longer carry their weight in the tribe. At that point they would ostracize them until they "chose" to kill themselves.
I think one of the first goals that civilization tries to achieve is the ability to generate excess prosperity in order to distribute it to those who can not create it themselves. Providing for the elderly Inuit above being an obvious example.
At the same time I think its important thing to realize that a successful life isn't such a narrow concept that people with down syndrome (and other ailments) shouldn't be allowed an opportunity to acheive it.
The picture clearly illustrates that the girl in question is physically deformed. But its also clearly illustrates that she is having fun playing with a ball on christmas. Implying that she is able to express herself through play and other activities. I'm willing to own a smaller tv and a worse car in order to provide her that opportunity.
I think a great example of people living life in face of classic adversity are the conjoined twins Reba and Lori Schappell.
Life isn't easy for anyone. We all battle our various demons. But a strong rule we should all have is that everyone should be given the opportunity to decide themselves if life is worth living.
I hope that our mere presence in the universe signifies that it is. |
