Need to know

Wakestock?
After being punted from Wasaga Beach two years ago, the ninth annual Wakestock, a rollicking niche-sport extravaganza, has found its home on Toronto's Centre Island.
More than 40 bands are set to take the stage, the skatepark is awaiting the swoosh of ball bearings, the beer gardens are poised to overflow and the wakeboard rails are ready to be ridden.
Wakestock is an annual celebration of the world's best wakeboarders, running Aug. 10-13. Champions from across North America will gather to cut sick tricks across the wake of speedboats on Centre Island's Long Pond.
Wakestock is the second of five stops on the International World Wakeboard Series tour, sanctioned by the World Wakeboard Association. Every year, the best boarders trek the world from Japan to the U.S. to compete for the coveted spot of World Series Champion.
This leg of the tour is the only stop that has four events: the Billabong Pro Railslide, Billabong Pro Wakeskate, Malibu Boats Expression Session and Oakley Launch Pool Invitational. Most other stops have only two. Competitors are competing for a cool $25,000. Last year, bad weather tamed the crowds and antics alike, but as the 'Stock revs up in T.O., the party shows no sign of slowing down.
What I want
They say the best things in life are free. So imagine how much fun Wakestock must be! Tickets for the full four days cost $44.50. For Thursday, they cost $10, Friday $24.50, Saturday $34.50, and Sunday $19.50. Tickets can be bought at http://www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Wakestock gate on Centre Island while quantities last. Like a bird in the wild, be prepared to be banded — wristbanded, to prove you've paid up.
The ferry costs $6 for adults, $3.50 for students and seniors, and $2.50 for children under the age of 14. Free for kids under 2. A trip on the subway still costs an unforgivable $2.75.
New for 2006
The best news: The parties are bigger and better as 'Stockers will move farther into the city to find their kicks.
The biggest addition is a kick-off street party in the Entertainment District. Revel in the beer gardens, watch the motocross and enjoy the spectacle of owning John St. on Thursday, Aug. 10.
Also this year, a third stage to house the plethora of music makers has been added. A new, bigger skateboard park — bring your board! — and a three-jump motocross circuit are on hand. The wakeboard and wakeskate courses have been modified as well. The rails, for example, are smaller this year, which will allow boarders to perform more technical tricks.
Where to crash
Cheap accommodations can be hard to come by in Toronto — fortunately, downtown denizens have been known to open their hearts and fold-out couches to wayward travellers. Find these kind-hearted souls at http://www.couchsurfing.com.
If that doesn't work, look for space in Toronto's bustling hostels. Check for the College Hostel and Planet Traveller's Hostel, both in Kensington Market. Or call the Village Backpacker's Hostel, near King St. W. and Spadina Ave., or Hostelling International near Church St. and Adelaide St. E.
Also, both the University of Toronto's dorms and Neil Wycik — Ryerson University's impromptu apartments — offer short-term rentals.
If a taste of Toronto's islands puts you in the mood for sleeping under vinyl shelters and on compact dirt, the nearest campsite, Glen Rouge Campground, is but a trek away by Highway 401 and Port Union Rd. For the car-less, there's a TTC bus that runs between the campground and the Rouge Hill GO Station.
No camping is allowed on the island. And it will be "swept" each night to ensure no stragglers are left behind.
Getting there
The Centre Island Ferry is located at the bottom of Bay St., tucked just behind the Westin Harbourfront Castle hotel. To get there by TTC or GO train, take the subway or train to Union station and walk south about 10 minutes along Bay St.
By car, take the Gardiner Expressway to the Yonge/York/Bay exit. Turn south on Yonge St. Parking is available in lots surrounding the ferry docks.
The ferry leaves approximately every half hour. During peak hours, the city has agreed to add an extra boat, increasing the frequency of departure to every 15 minutes. First ferry leaves at 8 a.m., last returns at 11:45 p.m.
Don't miss the last ferry. Really.
Here's the deal
No coolers, no bottles, no glass, no food, no drinks, no pets, no folding chairs, no rollerblades, no bicycles, no Frisbees, no umbrellas, no projectiles, no professional photography, no tripods. Backpacks will be searched. One bottle of water per person will be permitted.
Your money and tomfoolery will be welcomed. There will be ATMs on site for the former, you'll have to figure out the latter for yourself.
Do try to remember that gratuitous nudity in the buttock region will not seem as funny tomorrow, especially if the sun is shining, giving you a beautiful burn in a very awkward place.
And, again, don't miss the last ferry. Really.
