JURASSIC 5
R.E.M.G. presents one of the most successful hip-hop groups of all time, Jurassic 5. Comprised of rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir aka Soup, Mark 7even, and turntable maestros DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist came together from two separate crews, the Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee.
Originating in 1993, the hip-hop group made their debut in 1995 with the release of “Unified Rebellion” and three years later, released their self-titled debut album Jurassic 5. In a time where gangster rap controlled most of the power in the hip-hop industry, the release of an alternative hip-hop album like Jurassic 5 was considered to be a breath of fresh air. After the groups initial success, they signed to mega-label Interscope Records where they released their second album Quality Control. This album was a huge commercial success, breaking into the Billboard 200, with three singles making it to the top rap/hip hop single chart. Following the success of Quality Control Jurassic 5 issued the 2002 album Power in Numbers. This album featured guest performances from artists such as Nelly Furtado, Big Daddy Kane, and Kool Keith. Although the darker, intelligent Power in Numbers created a drastic change from the up-beat Quality Control, it was still highly received, and peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200.
The group is known for their old-school rap style that is delivered through tag-team delivery by their four MCs. Jurassic 5 has created a positive style of rap that, like many other old-school hip hop groups, has provided social commentary on issues important to our time. Aside from their work on conventional hip hop projects, Jurassic 5 has been able to break away from hip-hop tours and have gone on to work on large-scale events such as Lollapalooza 2003, Warped Tour 2000 and festivals such as Bonnaroo.
Recently Jurassic 5 has been touring without Cut Chemist, who opted to leave the group in order to pursue a solo career. The remaining five members have recorded and have released their fourth album, Feedback, on July 25, 2006. The first single from Feedback, "Work it Out" (featuring singer/songwriter Dave Matthews), is receiving acclaim from the industry.
Jurassic 5 will return to the first venue they ever played in Canada back in 1999 to perform a special intimate set, featuring songs from their new record Feedback.
