But remember before the arrival of the white man, they did not consider themselves "Native Americans" - one unified people. They were Cherokee, COmanche, Apache, Sioux, etc... independant groups with their own beliefs, customs and teritories that often waged "War" on each other with the technology available to them at the time (bows, arrows, knives) on a smaller scale. Animals have disputes over territory, food and mating rights using the technology available to them (ie claws and teeth) on an even smaller scale. Everything in nature is driven by 1) The desire to pass on your own genes and prevent others passing theirs on if you can AND 2) Survival (at least long enough to accomplish the former). Wars between humans come down to the same thing. It's just that our bigger brains have given us the capacity to hurt others on an unprecedented scale and the ability to justify it to ourselves. |
