Macbook Pro 15" or G5??

Well,

The time has finally come when I toss in the towel and say that I'm sick 'n tired of the instability surrounding a PC studio. I'm sick of Cubase crashing and being unpredictable, and I'm sick of the hardware conflicts.

All that aside, I plan on investing in a mac soon. Only decision at this point is whether to go for a laptop or a desktop. I know the firewire port on the laptop is just one (but you can add hubs to it to expand it). The PCMCIA firewire card I have on my PC laptop has a MOTU soundcard and an external hard drive (both firewire) hooked up to it, but it's common for the system not to recognize one or the other sometimes.

What are your thoughts on going for a G5 vs a macbook pro? Anyone know if it's safe to hook up an audio card and an external hard drive to a hub on the firewire port? Any suggestions? Inputs of experience? I'm planning on either running Cubase or, most probably, Logic. I also have a load of VSTi's that I'd like to use so hopefully Logic supports this.

Cheers,

dji

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT GET THE G5! If your wanting a desktop, the WWDC is just around the corner and they will probably release Intel PowerMacs. If you want a laptop I would still wait until after WWDC, since they might put the Core Duo 2 in the new books.

Just wait until after WWDC.

VSTi's for windows will not work for Mac. And since VST's for mac don't run in Logic, I would get Ableton Live 6 when it comes out, since its better anyway then that Logic. If you still want to be able to use Logic, get Logic Express and Ableton Live. Great pair, I've got em and their wonderful.

i changed over from a pc based studio to a mac g5 logic set up.

all i can say is the best choise i made in doing so in getting a mac set up..

i asked this same question on here bout 6 months ago before changing over and did'nt no what to do.people kept saying to me wait for this to come out and that to come out.its always going to be changing with techonolgy.

what you realy want to get go for that then

as for using logic its so easy to use.:)

eMachine of course. the best choice!

the intel mac desktops (aka the MacPro) are out. they are boasting quad intel cores. probably the sexiest computer ive ever seen in my life.

i think your choice to switch to mac is a solid one. my powerbook G4 was by far the best investment ive ever made into producing. its all up to you though, do you want portability to sacrifice performance and expandability?

if you are primarily having an fixed (not mobile) studio, i say do desktop all the way, just for the expandability options (16 gigs of ram and 2 TB of HD, WTF???) you can always get a laptop later.

im not terribly impressed with the new macbook pros. they got rid of the firewire 800 port, and like someone above said, they might be coming out with the core duo 2s. so you might want to wait there. they probably wont make any changes to the macpros for quite some time.

aaaahahahahahahahhahahahaha. LMFAO!!!!

Cubase never crashes for me. What's your problem.

I love the stability of my PC studio.

Maybe you should build a better PC and quit whining.

It could be bad luck.... bad luck that Apple will cash in on!

:O

But in all seriousness here's my idea, and it's a two-parter:

1. Keep your PC studio. Nothing beats VST and the beauty of cheap customization that PCs offer. Just build a better PC next time with better parts, 100$ says it's not Cubase's fault. It's you're fault, and the way you have your computer set up.

BUT

2. Get a macbook pro for the road! That's what I'm going to be doing soon. Once I get the dough, I'll have my nice PC studio at home, and my "stable" trusty MacBook on the road!

Makes sense to me.

not a bad piece of advice...
my studio's on a toshiba laptop with 1.5 gb of ram. maybe that explains it. my impression is that a PC must be built with solid components to function properly as a music workstation. that automatically rules out pretty much all pc laptops. macs are built with that in mind, so it takes a lot out of the equation.

so... i suppose the only choice remaining is whether to go desktop or laptop. if laptop, then the choice is definitely a mac. if desktop, well... it's either one i suppose.

another major question if i decide to switch to a mac. what are your preferences between cubase vs logic for the mac (especially when producing trance/house/chillout).

thanks guys

Well if you have the money.

I would totally buy a really nice MacBook.
And buy good components and build a good PC desktop.

As for what program to use... why not stick to something that's CROSS PLATFORM.

Logic is super keen and all, but ever since the Apple-Douches bought out emagic, they've stopped upgrading it for PC.

So stick with Albelton, Cubase, or Reason. All of those keep updated versions for both Mac and PC.

But.

If you decided to say, JUST get a MacBook. Hell get Logic 7, word on the street is that it's pimp as .
