say you live abroad for 5 years and someone tells you that you have nothing to do with that country just cause u were not born there.

what would be your reaction? would you agree or disagree?

just having an argument with a friend who also lives abroad, and thinks he has nothing to do with a country where he's been for so long... and keeps telling me that i shouldn't give a damn about that either.

It depends... would I be an integrated part of the society, or would I be living in a cultural isolation?

if u want to become part of it, u can..... yet same goes the other way

if u disconnect from it, u arent part of it.

Then certainly, you've got something to do with that country:

  • Politically, if you've been an integrated part of society during all this time, there's no sense in making you different than anyone else around you - your vision is deeply influenced by the social vision of the place you belong to, and you're living that reality. So, if you're not a stranger to that way-of-living, and you're being affected by the general decisions, I don't see why you should have no say. That's one something.

  • Socially, you're already influencing the society you live in by just being there. Therefore, you already something to do with that part of the country (i.e. the city/neighbourhood). That's another something.

  • The "being born there" reference is deeply flawed. First of all, if you've lived in another city of that country, you certainly have completely different view of the country than someone who lived in the same city during the whole life, yet your views are valid. The difference, compared to someone who lived in another country, is just conceptual. You're also there being affected by that society, you can just alienate yourself (pun intended).

Just the way they do thing imo. For example, i've been living in canada for a year, i came back home to the dominican republic and drive like im in canada and get flak from my friends for doing so, cuz i got use to it, they say i now drive like a grandma :wtf:

Ive been living in Ireland for 22 years (was moved here when I was 1), and no, I dont feel like I belong. And I've been told by others that I DONT belong.

So no matter how long you live in a place, you're always an unwanted foreigner :)

How can you influence a society just by being there?:wtf:

If you have friends from that country, relatively know the culture, and language, you do have something to do with that country, because most likely, you've contributed to the local economy by buying products that you most certainly need over the course of those 5 years.

that is a hard question to answer.... but i can see how u can NOT be involved... alianating yourself from the country, i knew many poeple from the embassy who would do this.. and their whole lives revolved around what the embassy did, parties they threw...

they would even do their shoppin on the embassy.....
