Ok i have had enough of *** windows. Nothing but problems and viruses. 'send report' is all i get. So annoying.

Should i switch to Linux?

Problem is i have no idea if all my software will work on Linux?

Is Linux more stable than Windows XP?

Is Linux prone to Viruses like XP?

Ive been looking around and noticed i can have both systems on my computer, but i want to download the 64bit version of lYnux:

http://www.mandriva.com/en/download

Will 64bit and XP 32bit run ok together? or should i stick to just the one OS?

Someone said Suse Linux or Redhat are also good, so which is better?

I came a cross this: http://store.mandriva.com/product_i...products_id=288{14}59&osCsid=97e080e257d48d87a539b2f2992c6bf2
Is this the full OS? would this be ideal?

WinXP isn't vulnerable if you use it right. First NEVER connect to the internet without SP2 or your ed. Get a legit key or download WGA crack, install all updates. Turn on automatic updates. Turn on windows firewall, also use some other firewall, norton or symantec. Best is to use hardware firewall (Router, Switch). Step three turn IE security level all the way up if your that stupid to click yes and accept all the you do. It will not even ask you anymore since you obviously don't know when your downloading/installing adware and spyware. Download Windows Media Player 11, your probably still using 9 or whatever came with your computer, and all the pr0n videos you got off limewire, bearshare, kazaa, emule, morpheus, all download viruses into your computer. People come up with all kinds of crazy exploits with these programs. Not safe. Keep an anti-virus running.

I'm always on IRC with Linux users and there always compiling or trying to make work. Simple stuff that should always work. I stick with XP because I don't see any reason to switch. There's also like 200 versions of linux, did you know which one your gonna get? Is that mandrake you listed? I've heard of that I think it's the one that looks like windows. Anyway you don't BUY Linux LOL that's the whole point it's a free OS. Get it off BitTorrent. Get the ISO off bit-torrent and burn with your favorite CD-Burning program that won't work on Linux. Then pop it in your drive, restart your computer, and pray you can figure out how to install it.

Cheers, i installed all updates etc, have the best possible virus protection, but still PROBLEMS. I used a Mac for yrs and loved it, not one problem at all. Madriva was the one i listed, it was meant to be easy to use for new users. Aparently it is meant to be more stable than windows. Plus if you read it i think it supports most Microsoft compnents. Madriva is not free though, due to the huge files and ammount of stuff you get.

I would rather spend 50-pounds on a Linux system that works wonders than get a crapy copy of windows. I juts want to know if anyone has Linux and uses Cubase on it problem?

I wa sthinking of doing this:

Buy a new G4 mother board, install it into my G3 Mac and use that for Music ONLY?

Use my PC for everything else and install Lynux?

What's the best possible virus protection? Tell me. I thought it was using common sense, but what are you using?

Maybe you got ed before you installed all updates and the best virus protection. Then it won't help you. Computers can get so ed over no virus scan/eliminator can help you. The only way is to go in the registry and delete everything in safe mode, or use a program like Hi-Jack This. Even then, a computer can get so ed that won't even get rid of it, and you have to format. or just re-install windows. (Hasn't happend to mine in 3 years at least. Early days of xp.)

If you jump to linux you wont be using the same apps. There are alot of great noise softwares for linux machines and alot of extra issues you will run into, that could possibly make you waste alot of time solving. It is relly fun, and you learn alot of stuff in the hours you need to spend tweaking the thing to get it working, and you dont pay as much, but time is money too.

Generally I dont think linux is an approriate alternative for regular people who are just frustrated with windows, linux can be very frustrating and if windows pisses you off you might not have enough patience to deal with linux issues either.

Cubase might work in emulation but youd have to do alot of to make it run, it would be easier using a native linux app like ardour, but then you have to learn a new set of programs. Fedora or Debian based distros have been the nicest ones I've dealt with so far for audio, you can make the others work too but it is fastest setting it all up for fedora or debain based.

If you do it, look up omsynth, ardour, seq24, jack, and hydrogen. Those are my favoite programs, ardour is a multitrack recorder, guess it would be your cubase substitute, omsynth is a modular synth like reaktor, seq24 is a dedicated midi sequencer since ardour is audio only you end up using this for your midi parts, jack is like rewire and it probably the greatest thing going for linux audio right now, hydrogen is a drum sampler/

Mcafee isn't great. Especially it's virus scan. Besides having newest edition make sure you update it. CWShredder won't help unless you have CoolWeb. Sounds like your ed massivly, you need to run Ad-Aware and SpyBot - Search & Destroy updated and with any plugins that might help. SpySweeper looks ok. Again make sure it's updated. If you haven't run Ad-Aware / Spybot yet do so now. You'll be sure to find tons of new things installed on your computer.

I have this solution, buy a new G5mac in October and sell my PC. ??? Macs are solid and aparently the core system cannot be attacked by Viruses plus i can still use MSN and Word.
Synchronicity
xp + norton internet security + adaware + spybot + registry fix + very very very careful downloading = no problems. Never needed McAfee and never will. I'm guessing Mcafee is or you aren't downloading carefully enough. Most likely both.

Close all unnecessary progs (norton, internet etc) when producing, defrag regularly, uninstall you don't need.

Search your comp with no phrase/word to list all your files, then sort by size and delete big unnecessary files. I edit video so this might not be useful for you.

If youre gonna p2p, LimeWire + Shareaza + very very very careful downloading. Norton will take care of the odd -up.

Get to know running processes in your task manager and if suspect ones appear google for them and check more than one sites opinion.

Give these programs I've mentioned a try for a month and I guarantee your comp will run a lot smoother.
