I don't have a problem with racial profiling, seeing that there is a clear statistical corelation between the "race" and the crime. However, in the case of terrorism, I would think it of more use to profile based on sex and age. In fact I think they are - at least I've been pulled into having my stuff and body checked on about half of my flights to/from/in the US since 9/11.

Btw. they profile on wearing braces, casts, and canes as well. I experienced this first hand when travelling from Boston to Copenhagen this summer.

That's utterly ridiculous.

You're labelling someone, subjectively1, on the grounds of how this specific individual looks and/or what "ideal" group this person should belong to. That's an insulting approach to an individual, and a clearly way of tackling a problem in the laziest possible way: "Are all terrorists Arab? Let's crack down on Arabs then!". Perfect reasoning! Deny them their chance of thinking differently, or even worse, being labelled for a characteristic that they just can't change as they were born that way (rather than chosen to be that way).

Blake actually said something quite interesting: "Research has shown that there is an even proportion of blacks, whites, and hispanics who posess illegal substances, however 97% of all drug arrestts consist of blacks and hispanics." - I don't know where he got these numbers from, but it clearly shows a social problem rather than a "racial" one. Are these "black" and "hipanic" drug dealers living in poverty? Are you going to label those who strive against discrimination - in spite of being "black" or "hispanic" - under the same umbrella term these drug dealers are grouped in?

1 - Racial profilling, and racism in general, are based in selective thinking, and subjected to opinions of "who is who". Keep in mind that both "Arabs" and "Blacks" are ideal (as the opposite to real) concepts.

You'd be kidding yourself if you didn't think it wasn't happening already:

Thirty-nine percent of respondents to the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll said they felt at least some prejudice against Muslims. The same percentage favored requiring Muslims, including U.S. citizens, to carry a special ID "as a means of preventing terrorist attacks in the United States." About one-third said U.S. Muslims were sympathetic to al-Qaeda, and 22% said they wouldn't want Muslims as neighbors.

[...]

Many therapists are counseling more Arab-Americans and Muslims since 9/11, Amer says. Also, in surveys of Muslim spiritual leaders to be reported at the psychological association meeting, the imams report a surge in worshipers seeking help for anxiety and stress related to possible discrimination.

Reports of such abuses skyrocketed in the first six months after 9/11, fell in 2002 and have climbed again since the Iraq war began in 2003, according to data kept by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an education and advocacy group in Washington, D.C.

The number of assault and other discriminatory complaints filed with the group jumped from 1,019 in 2003 to 1,972 in 2005, says Arsalan Iftikhar, national legal director.

Pretty scary if you ask me. :(

Statistically, approximately 0% of Muslims are "terrorists" which would make the average Muslim boarding a plane no more deserving of extra attention than a member of any other religious group. I don't remember Catholics being targetted when it was the IRA and Columbian juntas who were committing most of the world's terror attacks, so why should it be different for Muslims now?

I must say it's one of the most annoying things for frequent flyers. I make a conscious effort to avoid passing through the US when i fly from Vancouver to my home in the Dominican Republic for vacations. I usually dish out around CDN$200 more just to not fly through the damn country. It is annoying and outrageous to be 'randomly selected' because im Dominican and be subjected to a 10min search. Specially if im coming from f'ing Canada and not New York were we own the drug bussiness and whatnot.

I believe that racial profiling can be an aid, and i do atmitt like Lira said that it is a 'lazy' solution, but it needs to be coupled with common sense a bit more. And the other problem is the amazing ability of US border patrol to target the wrong peopl 100% of the time. If i dress nice when i fly, they barely look at my passport, if im jeans, a t-shirt and some sandals, they'll make me even turn on my laptop. And this i have empirically proved to myself.

I would support racial profiling if they got smarter personnel or trained them better at profiling, and if they coupled it with other more efficent measures, such as more intelligence or better xray machines, or enhanced security that everyone is subjected to.

There is already some profiling down for people from certain parts of the world, but I would not mind if racial profiling was done in conjunction with data-mining and other counter terroism operations. Being politically correct and sensitive to feelings isn't going to prevent terroism.

Not so sure about that.

I'm hiring for a position and my director told me to give minorities the benefit of a screening even if I think they are only 'ok'. See, there's a silver lining to every cloud!

I hate this race .

When they asked for it on my college application I left it blank because that is wrong.

I am strongly against it.
