I know the Urei 1620 mixer has amazing sound quailty, smooth feel, a real sense of quality to it. But i've never ever used a mixture that doesn't have EQ controls on it before, and I'm really wondering, HOW do you actually mix on the thing? do you have outbound isolators or do you just always mix perfectly and harmonically and have no EQ's to hide your mistakes.
I'm not a noob, i'm just very unsure on rotary mixers on the whole, i'm used to your standard linear based mixer with eq controls...
Any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance. |

| I have a xone:92 rotary but I have worked on the Urei 1620 before. As a stand alone, yes it doesnt have eq's but you can still mix. You really have to feel out your gains and it may take a bit to get used to. I dont know if they make a specific outboard eq for the 1620 but im sure you can find one that works if your that concerned. |

| there is no expansion module for the urei like there is on the rane 2016. i personally have never used one, it looks like it would be challenging to say the least. if the thing has a loop, you could always run a stand-alone EQ unit in the loop and do it that way... |

I've got a Urei and a Bozak. Its no big deal to not have eq's it forces you to work harder on your track selection. For me it makes my sets better because I can't get away with using eq's to mix two tracks that don't quite match up.
If your concerned about not haveing eq's there are plenty of good mixers that have eq's and rotary.
If you want the ultimate in sound, i'd say go with a urei. Its lack per channel eq's is part of why it has such a good sound.

go for the carl cox mixer, the pmc-cx. it replaced the pmc-37, and you can also pick up a rotary kit if you want to experiment.
to me that seems to be the best way to go. you will have all the features that modern mixers have, like eq, individual gains, panning, cueing options, etc. and if you want to mix urie style, you can do that too on the pmc-cx. just set all the gains to about 3 oclock or what ever, and just don't touch the eq at all. it's a totally different style of mixing tho... you don't go all the way w/the rotary control, if you tracks peak @ 0db when the dial is set at 7. -you just match all the other tracks to that. if the next track is louder, then that track will peak before you get to 7. if the next track is softer, then you will have room to go past 7 to match the volume.
i'm using a pmc55 w/rotary kit, and i can't live w/out it. i still mix the same way i always do, by tweaking the gain on every track before i bring it in, and crank the dials to 10. actaully, when i'm mixing 2 tracks at equal volume, -the equivalent of having the crossfader in the middle. both dials around 8 to keep the master from going too far into the red. but when one song is playing, the dial is at 10.
once you get used to mixing on the rotary, you will notice that you don't need to use the eq much to get a clean blend. actually it's pretty rare when i touch the eq now. i like it better that way. |

The Carl Cox mixer is twice as much as i can afford to spend on a mixer, it looks stunning and all, but it's a grand over here, the Urei I can pick up costs half that.
Does anyone have any ideas on how could go about mounting it?
And no, not that kind of mounting, not Brokeback Mounting style, I love quality mixers and all, but that's a step too far. |

I've got the 92 rotary, and I've used a Rane 2016 and Urei 1620.
You can mix very well on the 92 without ever thouching the EQ's.
