Which Processor is good lately?

So i am thinking of buying an allround new pc . Willing to spend around 700-900 euro depends on where i buy it.
It has been 2 years since i got my current one pent 4 2.8 gighz. Time for a new one imo :D
Anyway, i noticed that this pc is still not strong enough to do anything you want if it comes to music. I actually wanne work without having anything in mind about cpu limitations.
I have seen this new Duel core thing of pentium. Anyone know if this processor is good and heavy enough? Or maybe you have some other stuff to recommend?

| the new Core 2 Duo are the one to go at the moment.. they blow everything else away. especially the ones with 4MB L2 cache (6600, 6700 and 6800) |

| with 4mb you mean 2x 2mb? |

| afaik both cores share one 4MB L2 cache and it's not splited like on the amd x2 cpus. |
