latency terror and live recording

Hi there!
Recently there was a thread about "mastering while you produce" or something which made me think about changing my habits during production.

I used to record melodies and pads live with my keyboard and vsti's, put those parts together, tweaked them and started eq'ing and applying effects not before everything was in a rough position. that brings the difficulty that you do not have a perfect impression about what fits together while you compose.
Now i made a track template in Sonar with tracks and busses for the basic tasks and the basic effects allready assigned. the asio-latency is set to 5ms and i have like 20% cpu when i playback let's say a bassline with z3ta and the drumspart with battery while all effects and eq's on all the tracks and busses are turned on. now when i try to record some plugged hooks and phrazes with my keyboard with another vsti there is a big latency during the recording which makes it impossible to play. is this the latency-compensation? does that mean that i cant't try out new motifs playing live when the project is allready quite andvanced? or do I have to freeze everything and switch of all the effects, which is very inconvenient especially with the busses where sidechains and stuff make problems when you just switch them off.

Did anyone else get angry about stuff like that? i thought having a real fast dualcore machine would be the ultima ratio...

regards,

hereander
