Automating Midi Effects in Cubase SX3

Up until now, I've been trying to learn cubase, and I've found inserting effects on instruments, and automating them to be very easy.

However this evening, I have toyed with the midi effect inserts, which you put directly on a midi channel, and I am amazed by their power. The problem I'm having is I can't seem to automate them.

For instance, I have Midi04 with Arpache SX inserted on it, and I want to automate the change of octave range. But, when I push the + sign on the midi channel and look at the list of things to automate, I can't find any sort of choices to automate the controls on the midi effect, I can only find how to automate turning it on/off.

There must be a way to automate midi effects, so could somebody shed some light on this.

Yes you can, just click the W on the midi track so it lights up RED. Then click play and twiddle the knobs, this will create an automation track for each midi track that is W enbaled.

I don't think you can automate the Arpache SX effect as it does not support automation.

Also, you may need to go into Cubase preferences...Midi and make sure that MIDI Controller Input to Automation Tracks is ticked.

this is one of the reasons i quit using cubase.. i started in ableton, got pissed b/c of the rendering issues, tried cubase b/c it has a better sound engine (IMO).. automation of anything is incredibly tedious and annoying compared to Live, so I switched back

When you know or learn how to use these features then it isn't much of a problem and I am able to do alot more in Cubase that I didn't know was possible.

i keep learning new stuff everyday in cubase the possibilities are endless.

Automation tedious in Cubase? How could it be any more simple.. You press 'W' on the vst you want to automate, press play, and tweak your knobs.. End of story.

Most importantly, you have to press R for the plugin to read the automation. ;)
