So, has anyone much experience with barebone computer systems?
my computer, considering it is from 2000 and still plugging away is ok, but ive considered getting something newer, but rather upgrade than pay Dell $2000 outright.
deal or no deal? is building from scratch better?
Visionman gets decent reviews...although i quite worry about how ugly some of the cases are in general.
i dont think brown bagging a CPU is a good idea...

depends on what u want the computer to do for you? most barebones just give u the mobo, case, and psu...some come with cpu's. you might need to check the mobo to see which cpu you'll need to pickup.
I say do anything but pick up a dell. |

what's your budget and work up from there.
You may have issues with your current case needing to replace pretty much everything if you've had it since 2000 as graphic card ram etc have changed since then. |

haha...i wont buy a dell. but what i am currently using is a dell, from my parents Uni present. it likely wont support mobo upgrades.
its an 800 p3 as far as i know, dell with 256...install win2k post format of main drive.
still works fine without too much effort.
im reasonably savvy, would love a gaming rig for a bit at least. but with the price, bigger drives and multimedia are the most interesting

look around newegg.com, their prices and shipping speed are unbeatable. |

colin, my current rig is a built from scratch deal. I got mobo/case/ram/hdd/ from tiger and the cpu from newegg.
actually building the computer is quite simple, however it took me about a week to get the OS on there and actually working properly...remember tho, i'm quite the comp n00b.
i'd say go for it, the best part about making a comp from scratch is you can get exactly what you want and best set yourself up for future upgrades. as jdat said, start w/ a budget and work from there. |

| If you know how to do it, build it yourself. But dont attempt it unless you know what you're doing. |

| I tossed mine together from parts in about an hour, and another hour to get everything loaded onto it. |

if you have experience then go for it - you can re-use your current soundcard, ram, network card, videocard also to save some $$.
Dont forget the static strip when your building it ! they are VERY important |
