i no ME is ment to be totally pants, but my friend who has just bought a brand new pc, the shop shoved it on, and has deleted some important stuff by mistake, and it wont boot up, the error comes before the pc can boot and then it halts. now i no with Windows 98 u can press ed F8, or something like this while it starts and it brings up a menu where u can access dos if u need to format, and format it that way, but with ME is there that menu? coz it sounds like u need to format it so how would u format it when it doesnt load? isnt there a blue button inside the pc which u can press which wipes it all? advice plzzzzzzzzzzzzz! :)
cheers, me! :) |

| i dunno, she got infected with porn everywhere and deleted everything she thought was porn and it looks like that she deleted one of the files windows uses to boot up, so it doesnt, it gets the error before hand, and its gona take me an hour to bike over so if i have to format it then i wana no i can without getting all that way and saying "erm, no's" and looking like an arse :D |

If imm thinking right(imm 95% sure) u can make a boot disk in win 95/98 and boot the system from that. once u booted there should be a menu with boot with cd support, boot without cd support and some help thingy. select boot with cd support.
then pop the win me cd into the cd drive, select the cd drive ( tpye d: if the cd drive is assigned to d!) and type setup
this should install windows on top of the previous instalation, leaving any files and programs not releated to windows there.

If she does have ME, the she would need to make sure that her CD-ROM is the first boot option. If it's set if HDD then the setup will not even show up.
jonsimmonds is right though. If you get her computer to reinstall Windows ME, you don't lose alot. Mostly your old settings and some drivers.
Programs and files will remain there.
Good Luck

| thanks guys, the point is tho even tho she told the sales dude that she doesnt want ME, she got it anyway, so i could do what u both say (so a startup disc made in win 98 SE will work ME ?) install ME over the top, get it working and then its upto her if she wants a new OS or not, thanks guys :) |

Yeah that works because I did that on a mates pc a couple of weeks ago.
back to the stuff she deleted, if there is still some trace of the porn left you could download disk cleaner which remove all entries made by internet explorer i.e history etc, and ad-aware which checks for spyware.

Windows ME is a piece of . DOS is a basic one in Windows IMO, it can make really useful stuff, like booting, formatting.
My advice is:
1) take your hdd to a friend and copy your stuff there
2) put in Win98 start disk, or Win98 cd
3) format your hdd
4) install Win98 |
