Help With Soundproofing

hey guys - just moved into my college appt room and im getting serious reverberations and such throughout the room even at low levels on my monitors. i need help dampening the room so people cant hear it as much throughout the appt AND so i can get a clearer more realist sound coming from my monitors! i am totally new to dampening as my old room was suffiencently proofed before i bought monitors! any help would be wonderful!

walls
hang heavy curtain along the walls, it's the cheapest and probably best solution in your situation
velvet usually works the best, but any heavy fabric will do |

I guess the biggest thing would be to make sure your speakers aren't coupling with your desk or the walls or anything like that, so put them on some pillows or something like that.
The next thing would be to fill the room with clutter, that is a fairly cheap solution. Try to put some squishy things in corners especially.
I live in a little apartment surronded by college kids as well, and they can't stand trance so they hate when I make too much noise, the problem with bass is that it just shakes everything and goes right through the thin apartment walls.
Hang up lots of quilts and tapestries and stuff, try to find thick ones. |

quilts and blankets work really well.
Put them under your door in particular. If you can buy a few quilts, hang them up around all 4 walls surface, and make sure u seal up the door.
If you have spare fabric left over put extras on the corners.
It's a bit extreme, but hey, it works pretty well. Turn the bass down while you mix, it isn't really all that necessary anyway. |

Sorry but blankets on the wall wont do fu*k but make your room look like AS S. 
Isolate the monitors from the room first.
Use this it's pretty cheap and effective.
Next go out and steal 250$ without getting caught.

The biggest problem in rooms is bass management
You will need 8 of these.
CORNER BASS ABSORBERS

The 8 pack costs $96 for black and $132 for colors.
2 will go at the lower corners between you and the monitors.
You also will need 2 CORNER BLOCKS
They cost 25 for black and 33 for color.
Split the remaining 6 CORNER BASS ABSORBERS into 3 and 3 and make
a nice corner fill for the upper walls just as shown in the picture http://www.sweetwater.com/store/closeup/Atom12--Main but instead of paing 1000$ for a pair you will only pay $125.
So you don't pay Marketers, advertisers, e.c.t. you just pay for the fu*king foam.
Next you need 2 X (Acoustic Foam - Wedge12" x 12" x 3" (12 Pack) )

Make a nice wee pattern and stick it to the wall in front of you.

while extreme.. Obviously.. The above post is the best post i've seen in 4 yrs of looking around and asking the 'sound proofing' question every now and again.
From what i've read, everything you've suggested makes sense. Again, it'll make your room look like a loony's room, but still it'll definitely work.

Harriz is so right. Blankets will help dampen the highs and mids, but won't do anything to proof your room.
Essentially is you want to sound proof, rip out all your walls and start from the inside out.
There are plenty of quicker fixes though, but you better be ready to D.I.Y.! |

say if your sound-proofing stuffs have been there for maybe 1-2 years, would hygiene be a problem then? cuz yanno, the air aren't circulating that much, some get stuck into the foams/watever it is made of.
just another quick one tho, would there be a big difference when producing with a sound-proofed room compared to one that isn't? |

Why dont you buy some cheap MDF or wood and build a small square box big enough for you and all your gear. add a door and then pad the inside with quilts or foam and then cover that with some thin wood or more MDF, your own mini studio :toocool:
just dont forget to put in an air vent !! |
