Nah however they work, they're much preferred over the older smoke systems Ive come to despise. That and they act as much needed air conditioning during packed events.

They used the liquid ice quite a bit last night. It was so thick, I could have shanked someone and nobody would have been the wiser...

That being said, I can't wait to see you there on 10.06 Dirk!!!

ahahaha can't wait...

how were B&J ?

I have mixed feelings about the night to be honest.

I think the turnout was decent (maybe 400-500), but I think it could have been better. I chalk this one up to no one in SA really knowing who Blank and Jones were. The vibe was great though.

The sound was pretty crappy. It was loud, but very muddy. I blame the sound techs for that. They push the master volume on the DJM-600 all the way to 10 which gives you no room to play with, then they crank up the bass on the house system. As those of you who have played there know, you're not allowed to keep your bass knobs at 12 o'clock...you have to keep them around 9 o'clock and if you deviate from that, Light Jockey gets mad at you. Its a great venue, but they really need to get someone to tweak that system to its fullest potential. My ears rang when I left and I liken it to getting full at a half-ass Chinese buffet, but not really being satisfied. The sound just did not hit "the spot".

The tempo was pretty fast, pretty early and I think that led the night in the direction it went. I have mad respect for the opening DJs, but if you open with 138-140 BPM tracks, you're not really giving the headliners much to work with. Unsurprisingly, B&J came on and banged it out. I did enjoy hearing "Nightclubbing", "Exactly", and Sander Van Doorn's remix of "Oh Yeah"...but the night wasn't exactly an experience in my book. I am no doubt appreciative B&J came to San Antonio though, and I wish they could have had an insane crowd to play for. They deserve it.

At first I thought that maybe I was losing my taste for "Fast Trance", but I realized that even when I play tracks of that tempo, I play different stuff. I think the issue was of track selection moreso than genre and I truly feel that if the opening DJs had "opened", we would have seen a more melodic, more intelligent set from B&J.

good review fuckhead

I haven't posted a review in a long time. & it's not that I haven't been going to shows, it's that I've been travelling so much, & work(!) I haven't had time to post.

Which is bad, as I try to remember which shows I went to this year & I struggle. So my mid September mental note is to start posting reviews again.

Venue: I'd forgotten I'd been to Antro for Paul Oakenfold. It's in a strip mall, tucked away. Ample parking when Oakie's not playing. Decent layout--from the side tables, you can sit & check out the DJs w/o paying for VIP.
They've changed the layout--the decks are now in the front third of the room, rather than being all the way at the back as they were for Oakie.

Crowd: Good. An interesting split between

the diehard ~100 HARD TRANCXRS &
people out for a good time on a Friday & who Dave Molina could be playing for all they care.

Lights: Worthy of special mention. They'd discovered a "buy 2 green lasers, get 10 free" sale. I found it overkill, others might enjoy more.

Drinks: CHEAP!!! 2 red bull & Vodkas & a bottle of water for $9. (I left a $3 tip).

Bathrooms: Gross. Nuff said.

For Blank & Jones: they sounded just like they sound on their livesets I'd listened to. For me, & the mood I was in, it was overwhelming--not good. At midnight, B & J jumped on with a blitzing speed that even the Germans at the East Berlin all-night club OSTGUT http://www.discopia.com/portal/issues/issue4/ostgut would blanch at so early in the night. Too much, too soon. I found myself debating how quickly I could absorb those 2 red bull & vodkas & drive myself back to Austin.

Fortunately, around 1 AM, they moderated (shouldn't it be the other way around?) & started playing more melodic, less pounding stuff. I recognized Noone on Earth, The Killers, & the "oh yeah" song from the movie Secret of My Success.

About 50 people clustered near the DJ booth & boogied. B & J played til 2 AM. Both of them are theatrical, twiddling their hands in the sky to try to incite interest.

At the time, I was disappointed. Now, looking back, it was EXACTLY like their sets I'd heard--which is good & bad. I wished they'd played more to the mood of the crowd. & I wished they'd played "A Forest". But it was worth the drive, I'd been wanting to see them for years.

Dave, Ryan, nice to see you.
Packer-I doubt your existence.

That particular crowd really only likes me when I play the big shows. On any other night they prefer Oompaloompa House played out-of-phrase and out-of-key. I kinda prefer it stay that way too.

Sif doubt my existence! Sure to go to some of the same shows in the near future... Ferry @ Antro for instance?

I remember that from TCM. I get pretty annoyed when the systems arent configured to have the eq's at nuetral. Sounds like they need to hire someone who knows what the f*ck they're doing. 0.02

Pretty damn good show. So who is the creepy gay guy in the yellow shirt there? Ruined the mood evertime i saw him staring me down. He looked like he knew his music, so i assume its somebody here.

Also, who closed? Seemed like a couple of guys from new york, one guy had a NYY hat, other ZOOYORK shirt. They were pretty damn good. Kept the music bumpin.

There were some hot chicks there who really digged the music, seemed like some electronica fans. That always makes me happy. Especialy when you often see chicks trying to feel the music, but have absolutly no idea what they are hearing, lol.
