First of all, when were these people deemed "caregivers"? Is there some sort of law that says if you are related to someone who is incredibly fat and cannot take care of themself, that you are thereby legally bound to take care of them?

I cannot possibly see how this is their fault! They shouldn't have to be taking care of this woman. She should be in a hospital of some sort under strict diet and muscle rehab. This isn't the job for some yankee husband who is banging his step-daughter.

I wonder if you'd be so adament about this had the woman had celebal palsy, severely handicapped, or was 80 yrs old and just frail. Whether they were being paid to be a caregiver or not, that's who she depended on.

i think people generally assume that this woman became obese as a result of gluttony from the initial article. But after a few more news reports it does appear that she suffers from certain types of health ailments causing her enlarged state, one of which is an abnormal thyroid gland.

I know abnormal thyroids can lead to being excessivly over or underweight, but 800 pounds?

Also in one of the videos you can see sugary pop bottles and chips by her table, im not saying its pure gluttony, but i do think it played a factor aswell.

Shes also a diabetic, which can often point to abuse in sugary foods i thought? I know this definatly isnt always the case, but a possibility. (Dont quote me on this, this is just a thought :conf: )

What people fail to realize is that food can be just as addicting as drugs for some people. Add in the fact that there's such a thing as 'emotional eating'- one may be overweight, then be depressed that they are the weight they are, and then eat more out of depression.
Its a vicious cycle.

Having spent over a thrid of my life being very overweight (up to 300lbs) I know all about this cycle, however, at some point people need to take responsibility for their actions. I know it can be hard but if she can't seek help that is her failling and her's alone. The very worst thing we can do for any persons stuck in a downward spiral of their own making is to pitty them as many do. That just allows them to continue their self-destruction comforted in feeling that they are a "victim" of circumstance rather then the author of their own demise.

that begs the question as to whether the state of Tenessee offers social services that cater to these types of problems. i'd be curious to know whether this woman would have received any help had it not been for all the media attention being put on this.

It also begs the question did she seek any help?

heh i guess we'll never know. she seems to be doing it now!

edit:

i think you can pretty much seperate everyone into 2 camps: those who place the onus on the individual and those who feel that it is beyond that individual's control, whereby the onus is now on the caregiver.

what i'd like to know is whether the husband bothered to seek social assistance if he was so fed up with the situation. i can't imagine how that woman would have been able to do it on her own given her state. she probably can't even get up to grab the phone book!

awwww. I love Lisa!!

if we both get fat, we will just drink our problems away.

In that case...I'll start eating...I'd much rather just sit around with you as 500 pounders if we get to drink!
