Review: Hernan Cattaneo @ Crobar!

DJ A.K
First of all, I'd like to ask you guys to forgive me if the post is rambling or too long ( ).

Headed over to 'Cro w/ DJ Eco & company a bit after 11. Got in, chilled with a few ppl upstairs, then hit the Reed Room as the Main Room didn't open until midnight. Guestlist worked perfectly, despite my worries (Thanks Bradley, you're the man), though only 6 out the 9 ppl that I was bringing showed up.

So Flawless on the main floor was great. We got in, and I immdediately started getting into the groove; they were playing relatively underground beats that were more than danceable --- actually got people dancing in the Entire Reed Room and not just by the booth. I went over, talked to the DJs, mentioned TA. Apparently they check the site relatively frequently and were glad that we had come out to show our support.

And now to the openers in the main room. Now, I don't know who these guys are, but let me tell you, I was expecting Hip-Hop as all the flier said and as all you guys indicated, so what I heard turned out to be an amazing suprise. The openers started off dropping the hugest bombs --- relatively popular (so I guess 'classic') house tracks that made the dancefloor go wild like the guys that scream 'Tiesto' when Serge Devant is spinning. They even played 'Ian Carey feat. Mochino - Say What You Want (Ian Carey Dub Mix)', something that made me go absolutely wild (and I was still sober at that point).

But the show must go on, and at a little b4 2am, Hernan got on to drop some sickass tribal to start off with. He used his usual style of pausing more than the average house DJ so as to allow his breakdowns to really explode in the audience. But as the show went on, he seemed to be speeding up the BPMs on each of the tracks he played, until I could swear that around 4:15 he was slamming 140BPM. This guy played so many melodic songs with chillouts that made the crowd swoon with pleasure that the style could almost be mistaken for that of a trance DJ, but don't get me wrong, when he did bang it out, the beat was strong enough to shatter the walls of Jericho all over again.

So I guess that sums it up: great, awesome, and quite possibly the best 'welcome back' for me, as this was my first EDM party back in the city (to those who weren't aware, I lived in Syracuse over the summer). But I've got to add one thing about Hernan. He's impressed me with his humility and down-to-earth nature more than perhaps any other DJ with a name like his. He did the Ferry Corsten thing of pointing at audience members and letting people up on stage that wanted to go (if the bouncers let them past that is... grrr). Then, after the show, he started to sign autographs and just have random conversations (in english and spanish) with fans. When the bouncers started clearing the club out (don't rag on them, it's their job --- I even make a habit of saying 'Thanks for keeping us safe' to them), he leave with the fans. When he gets outside, there's no limo to take him to afterhours, no bently to take him to the airport/hotel/home of wealthy fan. No, he puts on a jacket, slings a backpack over one shoulder, and starts walking out with the fans, all the while just talking. He even complimented my crazy dance at the end lol (as did some really chill asian guys, not FOBs at all).

Oh right, one last thing, and then I'll let you guys go and try to get rid of these crazy aftereffects... The crowd was fantastic. Nobody was angry, everybody was willing to back up, give u a sip of water, or just chill w/ u. Peole that looked like they might be FOBs or Guidos turned out to be really nice and accomodating. The number of European and South American fans who really understood EDM in their hearts was staggering. There was even a new person to add to our 'Crobar Characters' list --- we called him lolipop man. Imagine gel in the hair, no shirt, tight jeans, gold chains, tatoos, and a lolipop in his mouth at all times. At first we were skeptical, but this guy has game! He was literally getting numbers left and right from girls that I'd almost consider unatainable --- he was literally humping this group of gorgeous girls (had his pants on, don't worry), and they thought it was great, and gave him their numbers. Like, what a badass...

Ok, I'm done, and I'm back on the scene!

ok so my review for cattaneo is somewhat strange but here goes..

was still decidin on whether to go because id have to go solo as usual, and the weather was lookin terrible, plus i smoked a bowl which made me get very lazy..so i decided to stay in..until around 945 when my friend (larry, some of u may know him) calls me up and says that hes changed his mind and wants to go...he even offers to pay for parking and hook me up with a treat *ahem*...no lose situation right? so we get over there, got there just in time to hit up the comped be4 12 so my wallet was in good shape, and i was pumped for hernan to say the least..

oh and you can breathe a sigh of relief, the mainroom was thumping some house to warmup, and afterimage (?) and some other dudes were rippin the reed room up...i was bumpin to some 16B lolitas in the coat check :D ..mainroom opener was decent, had some slow moments but the last half hour really got the crowd ready propa..hernan came on right before 2am and man...i cant wait for him to come around again  :crazy:really awesome mixing, great transitions and breaks in between massive basslines...crowd was pumped, not excessively rude or pushy, and nice pockets of room to dance..i recognized a few tracks (on spec - knights of columbus, a track off of disc2 on sequential..cant remember, and the prydz remix of 1983 which sounded siiick on the big system :eyespop::eyespop:..so at a lil past 4 and my friend gets tired and wanted to bounce..:whip:..last time i ever hesitate on goin solo..btw, nice seein A.K and meeting colibri and sidMI tonight

so i leave kinda bummed, get my car and turn onto 9th ave, go down 4 blocks and i brake behind a cab whos stopped at a green for some reason..cars drivin by on either side so i stay put and look in the rearview to see headlights rushin up behind way too fast for wet roads..i flinch, bracing myself against the seat and BAM..a cls500 nails us..we pull over and the dude comes out, lookin real spooked and just says..it doesnt look bad write down his number...he doesnt ask my name, just says to write down his license plate (handicap plate nonetheless) and starts gettin into his car...so i run over and ask him his name and he just says brian and speeds off..i get in the car, my friend is clutchin his neck in agony, and we make our way home only realize that hes right behind us all the way into jersey at which point he pulls over and we pass him by..he probably wont remember my name, doesnt have my number..he seemed afraid to attract attention as were we..all in all, got home in one piece, and will be dealin with this tomorrow :( ..hope larry's ok he seemd to be in a bit of pain...A.K., like u were sayin, we DEF shoulda stayed longer...

meanwhile anyone know any good body shops in jersey that work on VWs?

so..Cattaneo - 9.5/10..rest of night..:wtf:

I actually think that was the smallest female turnout for Hernan ever. Crowd had to be 80% dudes.

As for coming back, he's usually at Crobar once every two months. So maybe November?
SidMl
Great party. Hernan ripped it. We stayed till the end, though I think they closed a little early (5:30am?).

Good to see most of the crew. Dave (Bogartgreens), we've met before at tobacco warehouse and Love, but oh well, good to meet you as well.

One of my buddies had his first EDM event and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We went to Love afterwards but it wasn't really happening.
chanman7483
Btw, who was/were the dj/djs spinning in the Reed room before the hip hop dj(who had some nice track selection himself)? Even my friends who aren't into EDM were groovin... how could you not dance to those beats??
