THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that' is when it occured.

Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.

...

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said a call was received about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the boat on Batt Reef off the coast near Cairns with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.
Mr Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sucks for his wife. Half the country knows it and she doesn't.

When I first heard this tonight, I didn't believe it..but I am shocked and still trying to make sense of this. This man was one of my biggest inspirations. He had a relationship with all of nature, living and non-living that one day I hope to achieve. I would say passively he made alot of people aware of animals. I really want to know what type of sting-ray that killed him because during our univeristy beach seines down in seal beach California, we pull up close to 150 sting rays per day and yes each one is handled individually. My deepest condolences go out to Terri and the rest of the family as well as australia zoo, I hope his legacy lives on.

heh so true.
to be honest i laughed myself silly when i heard this; not so much out of humour but more disbelief. sorry for being insensitive but i suppose he wouldnt have wanted to go any otherway. its still kinda of weird thinking about it, he was one of the few icons that got the attention they deserved and for a good cause. you never saw him in the tabloids or in a bad light. RIP, hopefully wildlife conservation doesnt go to now.
