How long do those spikes grow up to? Ive seen stingrays before but that has to be a long spike to pierce through center bone on his chest to his heart. Anyone know how big the stingray was? Must've been a lucky precise stab.

It's like only the third death by stingray in recorded Australian history....so yeah, it's rare.

Here's a pic of a stingray barb from one caught in australia...they are made to pierce almost anything.

 wow, thats pretty big. I was thinking like the small rays you pet at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

the irony is he was making a documentary on how docile stingrays are

Steve's manager/director, who was with Steve when all this happened, was on CNN this morning saying how at the time he wasn't even shooting stuff for the documentary, but was spending a little time on a side project filming stuff for his sister or something.

His main project was the documentary, but on this day he was not working on it. He was ripping into CNN and all the other media outlets for not having its facts straight...which was funny, because after the interview CNN just continued to say it was while he was filming the documentary.

Anyhow, he said Steve's heart had already stopped by the time they were on their way back to shore (which took 30 minutes). Looks like he did rather quickly.

He also said there was people filming underwater (for his sister's project) so that means this is all probably caught on film. I wonder if it will ever be shown.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family :(

It only takes 3.5 inches of penetration at the right angle to penetrate the upper left ventricle and kill someone. Death is very slow and very painfull unfortunately....takes up to 20 minutes for the heart to stop...

I feel bad for the family.

The toxic venom that's coated on the barb probably made his death much quicker.

So just heard from MSNBC (for his brother I think?) that the incident is in fact on tape.

He said that the footage shows Steve above the Stingray when the Stingrays barb whipped into Steve's chest. After it pierced his chest, Steve then proceeded to pull the barb out of his chest and then immediately lost consciousness and then just floated up.

The tape is now in the possession of authorities as they do an inquiry.

And I hope they NEVER show it.
