Hey guys, I'm curious about something...who uses Stylus RMX and/or Atmosphere? I am wanting to make some SUPER killer pads for my new track, and when I did a search here, Atmosphere was one of the main ones in a couple of the threads.
About atmosphere...I have done a lot of research on this in the past couple days...I still am quite unclear though. Is this an actual sound generator? Like are there oscillators that generate the sound? Or is it entirely sample-playback? Samples are good but is this, in essence, just a huge sample-library with some front-end GUI to make it look pretty? My main concern is that I could make pads, with better control, in something else besides Atmosphere. I have this ethical thing that I can't get past, where I like to try and create as MUCH as possible of my own. Using samples, I have to manipulate them or else I feel all dirty and weird like I stole them. Even the simple 909 samples, I HATE using them as-is. Peak is my friend. Anyway, thoughts on Atmosphere?
I have similar concerns about Stylus RMX. listening to the demos, they sound sweet and all, and I like the clarity of the drums as well as the layout, but then I read more...is this basically a glorified ReCycle-ish program?!? I mean you can't get in and modify the actual drum grooves themselves? Or is it basically a drum machine with samples and you can make your own grooves without having to alter preset grooves? I realize you can import REX2 files, which is a plus. Anyone have experience with Stylus, too?
I just want to get a few opinions, as some of you know I'm a super DIY kind of guy. Makes the learning curve super steep at times but MUCH more gratifying when you come out on top. :)

atmosphere is sample-based...
if you feel bad about using vsti's like this, just think of it as if you're using a sample bassdrum for your kicks. i believe you don't create your own kicks, do you?
another word of advice: why reinvent the wheel? *makes us ponder huh :)* |

I use Atmosphere and i think it's a fantastic piece of work to add nice soundscapes in your tunes, espicially your breakdowns. The strings and pads sound great as well. Um it's all sampled based and you can mix different sounds to get new patches. |

Sweet, thanks guys! YEah, Atmosphere seemed the coolest of the two, at least most applicable to what I would need. I agree, too, Leng. I have this quote that I heard (not sure where). "Don't reinvent the wheel, simply re-align it." Very true. :)
Any more feedback on this issue? |

It means you don't have to start from scratch every time, just some simple adjustments can do wonders. |

Pretty much everything by Spectrasonics is a pleasure to work with; it's also all sample-based. Stylus is definitely not a drum machine, it's more like Recycle, but still a very different beast. Where it really shines is not so much in creating new drum lines or patterns but in tweaking them with moving filters and effects and so on. Technically you could probably create your own loops as rex and import those to have total control, although I don't know of anyone who does that. |

I know where you're coming form. Yes, Atmosphere is "nothing" but a rompler. Only sample based playback, however, it does include absolutely killer samples. So if your reasoning is that you want to do it yourself because you don't expect to find anything you want in the samples, then you're likely to be wrong. Atmosphere is simply great for pads. Nothing less.
However, if you just want to do it yourself, because you actually LIKE to work this way and get a lot of joy out of working from scratch and totally shaping the sounds yourself, you shouldn't consider Atmosphere... And I would actually stretch it a bit far here and claim that you shouldn't be considering software at all.
Get a hardware synth instead. I would recommend the Virus (or even an old second hand analog synth). With this you can make the craziest dreamy, airy, evolving, soundscapish, emotional, dreamy, wonderful pads - that is, once you learn how to use it :haha:
And since we're talking about pads, because of their slow attack, you don't have to worry about the jitter and timing issues related to midi. So hardware synths seem a perfect choice.
