Revelations: Johan Gielen delivers masterpiece
25/09/2006 - “It is not without meaning that my new album carries Revelations as its title,” says top deejay Johan Gielen. “The album is in many ways a revelation, and I think that many music lovers around the globe will appreciate this homage to music .”

With Revelations, Johan Gielen delivers a masterpiece that was almost three years in the making. Three years very well spent. Revelations has been fine-tuned to a double-compact disc that reflects both his stand on modern day dance and his career and life so far. Already Revelations has been inundated with praise. The worlds leading dancepublication DJ Mag (UK) gave it 5 out of 5, Veronicagids (Netherlands largest periodical) gave it the thumbs up: ‘Gielen is in glorious form’. Tracks of Revelations are being listened to on the internet by thousands.

In many ways this is an album that stands out. Johan Gielen made the album reflect his life and musical career in a way that is imposing to say the least. “I strived to make Revelations a musical mirror of the life I have led over the past years, and the emotions I have encountered along the way. The passing of my mother was one of the sad landmarks, that furthermore impacted on my life and music. On the more sunny side of life, I’ve tried to express the impressions I collected while travelling all over the globe. I salute all the great people that have shared their enthusiasm en joy for life and music with me along the way.”

And so it has become almost a litmus test of what Johan Gielen stands for today. It is a truly contemporary take on dance from one of the world’s leading deejays. The album is almost a catalogue of the unique Johan Gielen sound. From track 1 (Kuredu Express) Johan Gielen makes it very clear that this is no ordinary album. Kuredu Express is a deeply spiritual track that is rooted in Gielen’s two years residency in the world renowned Velfarre Club of Tokyo. Even though some years ago, to this day Johan Gielen cannot walks the streets of Tokyo without having to hand out autographs to fans all the time. As a tribute, some tracks are dedicated to the Japanese fans and the album had it first release in Japan.

“As time shapes every human being, it also had its effect on me and on this album’,” says Johan. “From the outset, I strived to incorporate the landmarks in my life that have made me what I am today. All the significant periods in my existence, have in any shape or form made their way into this album. From the thrill ride that touring the globe actually is, to the more serene and spiritual moments during my two years residency in Japan. It all had a profound impact on my life and my outlook on the world. It is with these wonderful memories and lasting impressions in my mind, that I set out to compose this album.”

Title track Revelations shows a very different Johan Gielen altogether. With that track it is a more energetic feel, very contemporary 2006 and almost futuristic even, with experimental soundscapes and techniques: it is his take on what trance today should sound like and can become.

In this he is a man with a mission. And that mission is simple to a fault: ‘produce the sound of today’. It is that sound he has been honing and perfecting since the early days. In countless studio sessions, with one goal only: to produce that energetic en unique blend that has become Johan Gielen, into a production that is nothing short of perfect. In effect, that drive for perfection has made the name Johan Gielen a watermark in its own right. Revelations is an album that is chockfull with emotion and sexiness, and blends in that energetic sound that has become the Johan Gielen trademark.

Pre-production tracks of Revelations have surfaced in a plethora of record bags of big-time deejays all over the globe already and will continue to do so. Rightly so, because any Johan Gielen production is widely regarded as an instant floor filler, always touching on that emotional note, with an inescapable beat.

Observing Johan Gielen working a sweat behind the decks, is a sight to behold. This is evidently no ordinary deejay. He has that sixth sense for style and moment in time, so again sweeping to new heights and - indeed, pleasure. He combines an instinctual feel for ambiance with uplifting deejay skills, resulting in that most magical of dance moments: a crowd fully surrendering to the deejay. It may come as no surprise that Johan Gielen has a wide fan base all over the globe. Revelations reveals Johan Gielen’s roots and emotions alike. E.G: with a track like ‘Moments’ he honours his mother, who passed away recently it is an emotional Gielen, superbly translated into music.

Revelations is the pinnacle of three years hard work and remixing. The latter being the case with special remix-version of Gielen hits like: ‘Dreamchild’, ‘Physical Overdrive’ and ‘Show me what you got’ on CD # 2. New remixes of Revelations by Global Experience, Estefan Falsh and Filterhaedz are slated for this Fall.

With tracks such as ‘Magnitude’, Gielen presents a truly energetic style that makes it real easy to envisage a festival mainstage packed to the hilt with fans going ballistic. As indeed is a sight that is not entirely new to Johan, as he has been touring the globe for the last decade, with gigs from Kuala Lumpur to Poznan Poland, van Vancouver tot Turkish Bodrum, all venues he performed to great acclaim. So it comes as no surprise that the release of the album is linked to a new World Tour, that will unite fans in clubs, at festivals and indeed, in stadiums.

Revelations is a clear statement from Johan Gielen. How did I get here and what do I have to tell you today. It has become an artists album that will find its way into the CD-slots of many a player - to stay there for months. As it should be with a truly great disc. “I sincerely hope that the way ahead holds many wonderful revelations for all who love music truly, deeply and profoundly. I’m convinced more than ever, that music is the force that unites people all over the world. I hope that Revelations may play a part in the musical life of many.”

I think Johan might have played in Dallas before in 2001 or 2002 at Area 51, if I'm not mistaken.

This is going to be a great show.

I will be showing my age a little here. But am I the only one that think Johan looks like a young Pete Townshend of The Who?
