Check the dj booth information thread as this has been covered numerous times and there's a link in there to a thread concerning a topic very much like this one. That is why sticky threads are there. You should check them before you even have a hint of a notion of you making a thread that's been done to death.

The best beginner mixer is slightly over $300. It's the Ecler Nuo2, and it's the bare minimum I would recommend.

ok, dont let the ecler whores sucker you into buying one. sure they are great mixers, but if you are a beginner, you will upgrade eventually anyways. at that time look into eclers.

in the $300 range (i'm assuming USD) i'd get a Denon DN-X300.

its very versatile and will give you an idea of what things to look for in the future. EQ kills, fader curve control, steady faders and EQs.

you cant go wrong with vestax either. I wouldnt recoment the VMC04. the faders are short and sticky and its pretty basic.

Vestax PCV 275 (It is what I started on and still use till I get an Ecler Nuo 4), you can find it used.

or a Numark DXM06, that seems to be pretty popular for beginners.

you really cant go wrong with a PCV-275. i love mine, but they are out of production so you'll have a very hard time finding a new one.

I've seen alot of problems with the DXM06s, they dont seem to be very reliable. When I worked for GC i think about 15-20% of the DXM06s we sold came back defective, they would work for a bit and then just crap out.

Maybe they were defective....I've heard they are pretty decent beginner mixers. But the Vestax has better build quality, but probably not as good sound quality.

Are you seriously trying to compare the DN-X300 to a Nuo2??? The Nuo2 has all of what you listed there, and is alot better sounding in all regards... for an extra $50 it is more than worth it to start out with a better piece of gear... and if he was to start out on an Ecler, and later upgrade to a Nuo4/Nuo5, he will already know how they feel and sound and won't have to get use to a new mixer...
