Just asking because i played at a party with a couple guys that have been doing it for awhile, one almost ten years the other a couple years, and they thought it was pretty odd when i set my headphones down to mix and eq. Ive only been doing this for two months and its just how i learned.. plus i dont see how you can tell what's going on when you have one ear on the headphones and one live. I tried doing it today and its no fun at all, actually kind of screwed up my mixes. Anyway i just dont see the point when you have two songs beatmatched..

Do what works best for you. But it doesn't hurt to try new methods since each mixer you use may offer different ways of doing things.

Part headphones, part monitor. I usually listen in on headphones, take them off, listen in the monitors, and then put the headphones back on, or the one ear headphones, one ear in monitors. Sometimes your headphones are more accurate than the monitors, and some monitors are more accurate than your headphones. Some mixers allow for EQing in the headphones, others don't, so it depends on the equipment and how everything is set up. So try the half headphones, half monitor method first and then see what way you like the best.

headphones on i find its far easier to tell if the tracks r drifting apart if u keep them on and eqing is easier for me i found it more difficult at first though.

I just back and forth between 100% monitors, 50/50 monitors/cans, and 100% cans... always listening for the most accurate sound...
I use to be 100% monitors, but my mixes were far to sloppy.. I found that a mix of all three methods works best for me!:) |

Everything depends on the sound where you're playing.

headphones off for me too. Much easier to hear the mix and hear your eqing. Every now and again I'll flick one headphone on just to check for drift, but for the most part its headphones off. I ued to mix one on one off but since I took them both off my eq-ing has gotten a lot smoother

i start my beatmatch one can on other ear to the monitors, then when ive got it matched, i check with both cans on to make sure, then when i start my mix i have both ears open to the speakers to do the eq'ing and such while mixing, like what j:digital said, a mix of all 3 works best, atleast for me.

if the tracks are beatmatched well, then u can just take ur headphones off and play it through the monitors. basically once u get used to it, u can just do it with the headphones off.
the method of doing it with one ear is also good but why use one ear when ur certain its all beatmatched well. plus ull get used to noticing off beats through the monitors if u practice and u can tell when they are druftubg apart.
or else just put on the headphones, lay them on ur head and listen through the monitors, and once a while put the headphones back on to make sure if everythings ok. this method will make u get out of sight though and u might mess up with eqing and the right time. |

Depends, if i have moniters I use them but at small parties with no moniters I have no choice but to use the headphones.

The advantage a DJ has over a crowd is what he hears in the headphones. You figure it out from there.

yea but that only means that u can select whatever u want and have it ready without the crowd hearing it. what u do with the headphones is make sure if beats are matched and if things are working out overall. u also adjust the eq through the headphones before even mixing it. once u see how the song sounds good with the current playing song, then u turn the eq off and remember what spot u have to put it on in order to have them both matching well. after all that, just listen to ur monitors and mix it, cause after all the ending result is what the crowd hears and not what u hear through the headphones.
