Trying to format XP, and my boot CD keeps installing Windows over and over again...

So I am using my computers Windows XP CD to boot up my computer so that I can get into the 'blue screen' which gives me a list of my hard drives and a few options to partition and format them etc..

The problem is every time I boot from the CD, I don't get a list of my hard drives or any pertaining information... it simply proceeds to install Windows by itself. It runs a system check for plugins blah blah blah... then it just jumps into an installation for Windows.

I tried to fix this by running it a few times and testing it out, but now I have 4 instances of Windows XP! Every time I boot I have 4 Windows XP instances which I can choose to boot from...

How can I get my boot CD to stop automatically installing Windows so that I can format my C: drive, and how can I get rid of all instances of XP and format correctly?

Any help is much appreciated

you need to create a boot disk that lets you start under DOS and from there you can do a format c:

The Setup boot disks are available so that you can run the Setup program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM.

Mine does support booting from CD-ROM, it's just that the actual boot-up in the blue-screen is being retarted...

i presume what you have is a recovery disk not a normal windows disc? download one, burn it, use your legitimate key & it might work.

edit: I've been informed that you have a recovery disc, which contains XP but is also programmed to recover the setup it was designed for, which is why it's auto selecting a partition to install into. You need to obtain an OEM or retail copy of XP, where no pre-defined settings are present. You will still need to use fdisk to repair the mess you have made, or delete the partitions manually via XP installer using an OEM or retail CD.

yea. download a Win98 boot disc, boot up into DOS with that in the drive and no XP. run "fdisk" which is a very basic partitioning tool. delete every single partition, even the master partition to leave your drive with no partitions, only it's capacity in unallocated space (not even a file system).

then reboot with XP in and no floppy and it won't install windows coz they'll be nowhere to install it to. Then create a C partition of equal space to your discs capacity. If it does go into installation itself, it'll do that on its own so it doesn't matter.

tho i've never heard of it doing that before..
