Hi there.
I don't know very much about trance at all. I used to listen to hardcore and then a friend introduced me to it.
I was wondering if you could help me if I list my favorite tracks by telling me thier subdivisions of the genre (if they have them) and why are the in that subdivision.
Also if anyone sees a sort of similarity in the songs I enjoy listening to can you recommend similar tracks?
This would help me greatly to have a better understnading of what I like in the music and about the genre.
Favorites so far (In no particular order):
Sasha - Xpander
Three Drives - Greece 2000 (Miro Vocal Mix)
Ernest v Bastian - A Few seconds after Trancefer
BT - Flaming June
Simon Patterson - F16
Dropzone - Noize
Matt Darey - Beautiful
BK - Revolution
Push - Strange world (2000 Remake)
Binary Finary - 1998
Phynn - Tempest
Push - Universal Nation
Thank you

I was talking about subdivisions of the genre, like smaller sections that trance can be divided into to better define itself. Different types of trance if you will?

| You could probaly say Xpander is Progressive Trance and Beautiful is Vocal Trance. |

xpander, flaming june and greece 2000 (original) are progressive trance.
similar tracks? l.s.g. - netherworld, tilt vs. pvd - rendezvous, bedrock - heaven scent, gipsy - i trance you, holden - horizons, riva - stringer, planisphere - deep blue dream, space manoeuvres - stage one, airwave - escape from nowhere, tilt - the world doesn't know...
all the rest are pretty much epic trance. recommendations? most of the popular stuff from '98 to this day.
you might also like trancecore. that is like hybrid between trance and hardcore. check out kevin energy and his nu energy label |

Thanks. I already have Bedrock - Heaven Scent, James Holden - Horizons, and Space Manoeuvers - Stage One (Solar Stone Mix). They are all songs I really like as well.
I will try and get the rest in due course.
How do Epic & Progressive trance differ from eachother? And can you identify one from the other just by listening to a track?
Another problem I have is describing different apects of a track to another person. Are there commonly used words that describe different aspects of the music (other than beat / rhythm)?
(Sorry if the above question sounds slightly stupid!)
As for Kevin Energy, he is one of the few hardcore DJ's I enjoy listening to so I suppose I don't really like Hardcore but Trancecore instead! :)
Thanks |

well, i would say progressive trance has some kind of 'main theme' (leading synth) which is constantly repeating through song, while other elements are changing. generally, it hasn't got long buildups, breakdowns and supersaws. with progressive you have feeling of moving somewhere, while epic has this buildup-breakdown-anthem structure that is not going anywhere. well, it's really hard to describe with words, you have to listen to songs to notice differences. |
