He he... Funny coincidence - I was just entertaining myself trying to do a remix of that track - this last week. :stongue:

Incidently, I browsed through tons of samles, softsynths, hardware synths etc. trying to come up with a good sound for the lead.
Let me make this suggestion, if you want something close to the original: Forget all about VAs and look for a rompler (or at least a hybrid).

I ended up finding some really useful factory presets on the XV-3080 and the Korg M1 (had to go to a friend who owns these synths). I believe the preset I ended up using came out of the Korg and was called "Paradise" (or something like that - maybe my memory is false). Then you might also want to consider parallel processing the guitar with some heavy distortion effect (i.e. the TC Tubifex) and then just feed a little bit of the combined guitar track to a reverb unit. That added a nice atmosphere to the riff.

And, on a different note, I ended up using the classic (and insanely over-used) "Lately Bass" preset from the DX7 for the offbeat bassline.

i think i heard the nord lead 3 was probably the best bet!

Unreal sound, just seems to cut through the mix and it sounds great from the studio to the club, I've got a TX81Z but will sample it as I need to use it in Reason

Yeah, it IS great, but I just feel a bit "stupid" when I use it, as I know how much it has been used (and still is).
Actually, I tried sampling it to HALion in 24 bit, but I really feel as the character was different when playing the sampler compared to the sound when playing the original.
In Z3ta+ there are some presets called "Lately Bass 01", 02 and 03, but I feel that they too have a somewhat different character.

Nothing wrong with the lately bass- classic!

And the original seven cities lead was done on a Nord Lead

i was doing the same thing, making that song a month ago, accidently when pressing some notes and i don`t know how but i got a good sound to do it with out of native instruments pro 53.
i guess it was a preset, but i don`t know if it was a standard one.
but i`m not that good with reverb/delay to actually make a clear copy of the tune.
but the sound of the nord lead 3 in the trance synth showcase sounded better then mine.

i just set an arp on it for fun :haha:

Yes I know what you mean I've heard it sampled on some refill but it sounds crap compared to the original. if you have the samples I'll trade some other wavs if you want

I actually don't have the samples anymore as I deleted them, but since I still own the synth, I could record them again and share them (unless there are legal issues to this - I really don't know about that). What took me the longest last time was the time spend on cutting the wav into seperate wave files and map them out on the HALion keys. What I could do, is to just record one "big" wave-file with all keys played at different velocities and lengths and then I could leave it to you to do the cutting and mapping ;-)
Unless it's illegal, I obviously don't mind doing that, but it'll have to be next week at the earliest since I just started rebuilding my studio.

EDIT: My bad, I just read your earlier post where you mentioned you have the synth yourself. So I guess you don't need me to do the recording then...

I'd be very interested in the lately bass sample if you could record it. (just a single wav with a set velocity and 8th/16th notes would be more than fine). There shouldn't be any legal issues, it's not like you're trying to sell the sample.

No problems. I'll do it early next week, if I don't get a chance before.

As I recall a single set of velocity is all you'll need, as the sound doesn't change on different velocities (only the volume does).

Thanks :)
