Pads - Can you make them?

From what I have seen, it seems to be the least talked about subject and everywhere I ask I never really seem to get an answer.

So, how do you get those warm/creamy swirling pads? I know it's a good idea to layer 2 or more sounds with a lot of reverb but I can never seem to get anything more than a saw/sine (just an example) that has a bit of attack./decay and reverb, they sound horrible and tiny.

phasers help, stacking and panning the parts helps too.

Well, there are several ways to create pads - it depends on what type of synth you're using.

If you use an analogue or VA, then a pad is usually produced by setting the oscillators to saw or pulse waves (use as many osc as you have available). Set the amp envelope to a gentle attack and release. Detune the oscillators and try adding some chorus effect. You could also try experimenting with unison effect.
In addition, if you want to create something really interesting, you should layer your pads, with different filter settings on each. You could also add some motion by automating filter settings, lfo's etc.
If you wanna add warmth, you can use subtle distortion, enhancement and saturation effects.

If you're using FM or wavetable, you can also make some really great pads. Don't have a specific recipe for you though, but you could load a pad preset and see how the settings are and then work from there.

Yeah, don't see a lot of posts about pad creation, mainly the ones you are talking about. I've dabbled in sound design, but I'm no where near getting a great swirling pad sound, or anything else for that matter. I'm just not willing to put the time in to learn sound creation, yet. It seems to take a special knack and ability to be able to program good sounds. Those complex swirling pads have got to be the most tedius to program. RivalMan has some pretty good advice here though. I'm almost encouraged to try a little sound design. I tend to think I'll never come up with any sounds that are as good as the ones I can buy or download though.

BootlegBlagga, if you create any good pads, give us a patch or MP3.

Most time consuming and tedious they may be, but man they pay off! A track witha good pad section is omfg super sexy!!!
