Has DJing made you enjoy clubbing less?

I wonder if anyone else has noticed over the years that other DJs playing for you don't impress you or make you excited anymore? like before you DJ'd?

I just seemed to notice that ever since I began DJing, I would go clubbing less and less, cuz there's no more appeal to the act, since I have a much better idea of what's goin on behind the decks.

I def hold DJs to a higher standard now, and I'm alot more critical of the tracks they play, especially cause now that I ing buy my own music, I know whats coming out, and whats new, so I'm less impressed when they're playing popular known stuff that I've already heard 20 times.

This is why Danny Howells has climbed higher in my DJ rankings :D

Definitely.

I don't go to clubs to socialize - I'm a music nerd :)

No but I was never a clubber in the first place. I think it has enhanced it for me if anything. I know where all the good parties are now. I know which clubs to avoid. I know when all the good headliners come to town on top of knowing who all the good headliners actually are etc...-

and have a good time... but that whole networking thing always bites you in the ass

Interesting, i've thought exactly the same thing about him just recently. I've always known him, but i saw/heard him live at HiFi Festival in ireland there, he was playing before steve lawler.

After he played i realised just how good he had been. I hadn't enjoyed an act that much in ages! Didn't know a single track of his but it was brilliant! Loved every minute of it, and he was in the end, the highlight of the festival for me!

I have two of his sets in my car at the moment, and while he does become slightly boring at parts, he picks it up nicely without fail most times! :)

for it me it depends on the dj and if he/she plays a good set or not.
i dunno about enjoying clubbing more or less but i go clubing only to see a dj who i know/think/heardofbeing good. i go clubbing to be inspired. :P

Thats a great question. The answer is defintely yes. I kind of miss the beginning days sometimes where I was just another guy there enjoying the music. Don't get me wrong I still do, but now as a dj and producer, I'm constantly analyzing the DJ's performance and the whole experience is quite different.

I pay attention more to the mixing now for sure, but overall it doesn't detract from me having a "good time".

I've been thinking about this question a lot today, and realized in my reflections that I can name the nights out that I actually really enjoyed with regards to "headliners" in the last year on less than one hand.

- Max Graham in Chicago last January
- Sasha/Luke Fair @ Glass WMC 2006
- Donald Glaude @ Mantra Lounge
- Danny Howells @ Vision Chicago (Even though this was right when I was diagnosed with Mono and I couldn't really party, he played a helluva set!)

I've probably gone out 20+ nights in the last year specifically to see certain DJ's, and I've been thoroughly disappointed by the headliner almost every time. However, there is a reverse side to the coin in that my appreciation for the local DJ's I see on a moderately regular basis (though I haven't been out at all in well over 3 months) has grown immensely. These are the dudes doing interesting things, and in Chicago there is no shortage of outstanding locals.

Great question/thread... :)

yes, sadly, always been a musicnerd but then when the basic foundations of mixing and phrasing was burned into my head, after that it was just hard to just ing dance and stop being so overanalytic. but really, after a drink or three this tends to calm down

For me the two went hand in hand. Never knew what a rave was, didn't know clubs booked top name acts, didn't even know what ing E was. All I knew was that there was this type of music called "trance" and "house", and getting into turntablism when I was 14(23 now), there was no going back.
All in all, I use to spend the majority of my time at shows and clubs interpreting the DJ and his/her set, but the bigger picture is how well the DJ is managing the party and the music: are people having a good time? That's what I look for, and try and emulate as well.
