It was exactly a week ago that tragedy hit a Montreal school, when a crazed shooter gunned down 20 people before killing himself.
Now, seven days later, officials at another campus of higher learning are dealing with their own emergency. But this one was thankfully far less serious.
Officials at Brock University in St. Catharines were forced to decontaminate six people after they were exposed to a mysterious white powder. The substance was first discovered by an employee in the mail room around 10:30am Wednesday, after he came in contact with an envelope.
Police will only say the accompanying letter contained some kind of veiled threat but refused to go into more detail. Those affected by the powder remained on the 12th floor of one of the university's buildings, but school officials have issued a statement insisting there's no danger to any other staff or students and that classes were continuing as scheduled.
The Schmon Tower, where the drama took place, has been blocked off and at least 60 other people were being held in a gymnasium as police and experts try to determine what the substance is, why it was sent and whether there's any more of it. |
