Kinda like how the liquor hours are extended to 4 during the film festival when the politicians want to party but its 2 for the rest of us unwashed commoners. |

last winter when they first started enforcing the law against leaving your car running (in winter with no one in it), a female OPP officer went outside, started her car to warm it up and put her badge and gun in the car only to come out to find her car stolen (big deal to loose your badge let alone your gun!). I'm assuming its likely related to a similar set of concerns if you're not in the car it could increase car theft numbers which would tie up more police resources and money...
As for being fined with you in the car idling.... :conf: meh just tell them your car battery just died and you just got a boost, turning your car off in the next 20 minutes could mean battery failure again. |

i never leave my car on...anywhere...not for a second, not even if i have someone watching it for me, or someone else in the car...
lastnight i was at the bank to use the atm...and 3 cars, gas guzzlers too...were left on while each owner used the atm's in the bank, and one proceeded to the convenience store after he was done...and another to the blockbuster a store down or two...
i mean, how about a 365 day of the year blitz on stupidity and laziness... |

The people of Ontario/GTA/Toronto need to know that the world is not one big garbage dump that they can fill up at their convenience.

Canada is the most wasteful country on the planet, its about time that our ideas on waste management actually change. If we are such an advanced nation, we need to start acting like it.

"It's part of a strategy to address global warming," Attorney-General Bill Lockyer said in a telephone interview. "The goal of this one is to hold these automobile manufacturers accountable for the monies taxpayers are spending to address these harms."
The lawsuit is the latest effort from California to combat the effects of global warming.
Last month, the state legislature passed a landmark bill designed to regulate emissions of greenhouse gases from industries. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to sign the measure into law by the end of the month.
Two years ago, the state enacted similar requirements for auto emissions, prompting car makers to file suit in federal court.
Mr. Lockyer's action comes 48 days before the November general election. He is termed out of office this year and is running for state treasurer.
"This is the silly season of elections in the fall, and obviously he thinks this will gain him a few marginal votes," said Sean McAlinden, an economist with the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich. "I don't think it means anything more than it says. It's California politics."
Mr. Lockyer said the complaint has nothing to do with election-year politics.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Oakland, names Chrysler Group C, GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda North America Inc. C and Nissan North America Inc. C
The auto makers responded to Mr. Lockyer's lawsuit by issuing a statement saying they already are building cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers also cited a similar lawsuit brought against utilities that was dismissed previously by a federal court in New York.
The alliance did not respond to the substance of Mr. Lockyer's lawsuit, saying manufacturers would need time to review the complaint. AP

yeah I just read that this morning too.
Having been living in Los Angeles the last few months I can honestly say that California is far more aware of environmental alternatives in the auto industry. Almost every mall I went to had priority parking for hybrid/alt fuel cars and you get express lane acess even if there is only one person in the car. They also have refueling stations every few miles for super convience of these cars. While Torontos pollution problem is no where near as bad as LA we could benifit a lot from adopting more of LA's practices and principals when it comes to minimizing envrionmental damage. |

Branson said the profits will be invested in efforts to find renewable, sustainable energy sources in an effort to wean the world off of oil and coal, fossil fuels that many scientists tie to global warming because of their carbon dioxide emissions.
“Our generation has inherited an incredibly beautiful world from our parents and they from their parents,” Branson said with Clinton at his side. “We must not be the generation responsible for irreversibly damaging the environment.”
Left unsaid was the possibility that some renewable energy investments could pay off handsomely for Branson and his company should they become accepted by industry and consumers.
Branson said he'd be announcing more specifics at a press conference next Wednesday, but the plan goes beyond his statements last month that his companies over the next four years would spend $1 billion on alternative energy like ethanol as well as solar and wind power.
The commitment made Thursday would in one stroke ensure that the Clinton conference, which brings people together to brainstorm tangible solutions to global issues, would more than meet its goal of matching last year's efforts, which led to pledges of $2 billion in investments.
Interest in cellulosic ethanol
Last year, Branson said he planned to turn his back on fossil fuels and use farm and logging waste to power his four airlines, which operate almost 100 aircraft.
“We are going to start building cellulosic ethanol plants (to make) fuel that is derived from the waste product” on farms and logging sites, he said at the time. “It is 100 percent environmentally friendly and I believe it’s the future of fuel, and over the next 20 or 30 years I think it actually will replace the conventional fuel that you get out of the ground.”
Using organic waste, or biomass, could be substantially cheaper than corn or sugar cane, the traditional sources for ethanol, since that waste is not a primary product but simply residue from other agriculture or logging. But the technology to efficiently use biomass is still several years away, experts estimate.
Branson did not say where Virgin would build his factories or how economically viable cellulosic ethanol would prove. “We are in the early days,” he admitted.
“We use around 700 million gallons of fuel a year between the four airlines,” Branson said. “I hope that over the next five to six years we can replace some or all of that” with plant-based ethanol.
Clean water project
The Clinton conference began Wednesday with a slew of world figures, among them first lady Laura Bush, who announced a partnership aimed at bringing clean drinking water to communities in sub-Saharan Africa.
The program, called Play Pumps, will install specially designed playground equipment that will use the force generated by children using the equipment to pump clean water from beneath the ground.
"Play pumps are fueled by an endless energy source: children at play," Bush said.
The program will be financed by $16 million from U.S. government agencies and the Case Foundation and the MCJ Foundation.
There are already about 700 play pumps in use in the countries of southern Africa, said Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation. The money announced Wednesday will pay for about 1,000 more, and the goal is to have 4,000 in use by 2010, reaching about 10 million people.
The list of invited guests for the conference includes such diverse voices as Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, cyclist Lance Armstrong, CBS News anchor Katie Couric, actor Don Cheadle and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

I think you guys missed my point.
Its not about idling for 3 minutes, or 7 minutes or 30 seconds. Its about the fact that the city has actually hired a bunch of people to look for people who do this to make money.
You really think the city cares if you idle your car? Really?
If you do i have some prime ocean front property in the alleutians for sale.
Im tired of all levels of government nitpicking through every single aspect of our lives just to make a buck. |
