Assign midi controller sliders to Tonic in Cubase?

I want to have one of my sliders on my Edirol PCR-30 keyboard always controlling a Tonic Filter cutoff, can I do it?

It's all about Generic Remotes

Do this:

Devices Menu ->
Device Setup up

Press the plus sign and select Generic Remote.

Have its input be the Edirol.

Now select "Fader 1" below and click "Learn" now move the fader/pot whatever you want to be the Tonic Cutoff

Now go to the dialog below that, and select Fader 1.

In my example. Set it to VST Mixer, Set it to Channel 1, Then the value action, set that to Insert 1, Tonic, Cutoff.

But you should know this already. Noob. J/K.

/me goes back to being stoned.

EDIT:

Or just make a midichannel and assign it's input to your Edirol, and it's output to the Tonic. Then hold shift and move your mouse over the different knobs in Tonic. It will tell you what it's CC is. Now just set a knob on your edirol to respond on CC74 (filter cutoff) and another knob CC71 (filter resonance)

But it would have been nice if there was some sort of "universal" mapping of midicontrollers to plugin functions like filter cutoff in Cubase.
Oh maybe a easy-to-use quick midi learn, like the one Logic has.

Oh well, maybe we'll get that with version 4 :wtf:

You don't need the generic remote. Just route a MIDI track to the Tonic plugin and tweak its GM cutoff CC. It's mapped by default to exactly where it should be, along with resonance.

RivalMan, there is a "universal" mapping, it's the GM2 mapping. Unfortunately a lot of VST developers either don't know about it or disregard it (including the Virus PowerCore, ARGH!)

Didn't know that, but it's a shame it's not implemented more.

On a different note: Do you have the Virus Powercore? I'm still trying to decide between that and a second hand Nord Rack 2.

My apologies, Swamper's Top 250 Poll spam appeared right before your post and I um... glossed over it.

Durrrrr indeed.

Can't tell you a thing about the Nord but I can tell you whatever you need to know about the VP. I'm loath to hijack so PM me if you want.

Do you have to make a midi track to do it your way too DjFreaq?

I'm just messing with you Nut ;) you always have good advice to give. Thought I'd give you a hard time.

Well if you want hands on control of Tonic. Then a MIDI control track is a good way to do it. That way you can assign your knobs to all the different CC values of Tonic.

But my first method also works if you don't WANT to have a seperate midi track for tonic. The generic remote option is frankly too much work when it's easy just to great a new miditrack. Then drop that midi track into a folder track with your track with tonic on it (if you want to stay organized).

It's really simple.

The learn function never works for me. It just doesnt recognise I'm tweaking anything. The controller is working fine. Does anyone else get this?

Now are you using a MIDI interface. Or a direct USB connection from you MIDI controller to your computer. In either case update the drivers for either your keyboard or you midi interface.

Also depending on your midi controller, there might be different modes/presets. The Radium 49 for example has 10 presets for different programs. I keep it in Preset 1 most of the time and I've never had a problem with generic remote or midi learn or anything really.

The only thing I've noticed that is shakey about Cubase sometimes is that if you disconnect your USB midicontroller, then reconnect it. Even if you load/reload cubase serveral times it doesn't want to recognize your keyboard again, and you'll have to restart.

Meh. I dunno. Just keep messing around with your configuration. 9 times out of 10 it's something you've done, and not the software.
