Exactly what IS 'Colour'

Hey folks.
Here's a question. When effects units and processors talk about altering the colour of the sound - what exactly does that mean? Obvisouly, you listen to it, and you know what it does - but if you were trying to describe it (in a book let's say - for 'Dummies' people (cough cough hint hint)) how would you describe it.
What I've written is: Filter: Manipulates the sound frequencies to alter the colour of the sound by removing then replacing frequencies
But that's not good enough for them.
The other thing I'm having problems putting into words is why the Hamster set-up is good for scratch DJs. I know why - I just can't put it in a short sentence. That one I'll probably be able to work out - but if anyone can give me a better description of 'Colour' - I'd love it.

That all depends. Are you about to give me abuse because I can write a guide and a book, but don't know how to describe 'Colour'.
But, yes - it's me. I've got a book coming out in December "DJing for Dummies" (I'm surprised you've missed my countless mentions of it in this forum) and I need to have it all tied up for proof reading by tomorrow.
Can you help?

Filter removes harmonics and harmonics make up tonality, so I'd say tonal character rather than colour.
Tho the term colour is used also to describe distortion (like phase changes), I don't really grasp that terminology. I think it is just plain dumb to use a word our senses have been associated with differently. ie eyes = colour, ears = tone
Having said that I sometimes describe a sound as a colour eg green. Weird. |

| tone color is the same as timbre, i dont know why people choose to call it color though. |

I associate colours with days of the weekn numbers and music titles. It's strange how the brain works, huh?
Thanks for the advice. Just got to work out a way to describe it that someone with no musical knowledge would understand. I wonder if that's too much to ask... That said, Tonal Quality is better than colour. Bloody Pioneer...

if we assume the frequency spectrum of a sound is similar to the frequency spectrum of colour...
changing any part of this spectrum would be altering the 'colour'.
something like that?
edit: to make more sense...any sound has a fundamental with respective harmonics that make up its frequency spectrum. this spectrum is similar to a colour spectrum where colour varies with frequency. therefore, by altering the frequencies of a given sound, you are altering the 'colour'. |

so
Filter = Colour?
or
Colour = Harmonic
so a filter is a tool to change the harmonics of a song,not really changing, just take off the note of a song, and leave it without tonality? |

i think in binary code...
no i don't...but i do memorize numbers by making up a mathematical sequence for them... |
