Woooo... this was quite a night. Just woke up after 2 hours of sleep with my heart pounding so fast that it might as well be one of those rock crushers from Benny Benassi's 'Satisfaction' video.
So, I got in around 11:30... just in time to hear Mixin' Marc finish up his set with some amazingly hard and driving beats. He seemed to be having a lot of fun, and the crowd liked that. Benassi was on next. His mixing was fantastic and his track selection was right on. The only thing I was dissapointed about was that I wanted to hear him drop more of his productions for which he is so well known (the whole 'unique sound of Benny Benassi' thing). He also dropped the first of two drops (the other was Felix) of that new Prydz vs. Floyd track called 'Proper Education'. I went into the party certain that I'd hear it at least once, and I was right. But Benassi's set was overall quite technically good, and kept the crowd moving at all times.
Rocket Ride, Rocket Ride, take me on a Rocket Ride... next was Felix! A lot of pauses and breaks between absurdly hard rock/house/electro drops made the set seem a little bit Armand van Helden. Of course, Felix completely rocked it... the lack of a driving beat the entire set did not prevent me from enjoying what was there, and minute long breaks with constant buildup make you really love the drops that come after them, even if they're not all that long. He dropped classics like "Silver Screen (shower scene)" or "Jack U". The set included a lot of his own productions (that's what I like to hear DJs play, so I was happy), a lot of remixes of rock songs (and one actual rock song, which got some people really into it, but confused the out of me... like... how do I dance to this...?), and a few oddball tracks thrown in for good measure (it's amazing what you can do with long breaks like that... they let you change the style of the set from track to track, as by pausing the beat you're effectively erasing all memory of it and laying the groundwork for another). When he dropped Angello's new remix of that Liebrand and Eurythmics mashup... "Eurythmics vs. Liebrand - Sweet Dreams (Angello Mix)", sometimes just referred to as 'Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Angello mix), the crowd was cheering louder than I've ever heard anyone cheer at Crobar, short of Tiesto or Ferry parties.
So then when about 4am rolled around, and Felix was still on (extending his set just a bit), some commotion broke out among some of the bouncers that were up on stage. It seems that they were alerting Green Velvet, the next show on, of the fact that someone had just called the police due to a fight outside. So Felix gets off, Greet Velvet gets on... they jump out onto the edge of the stage and start psyching up the crowd, following which they drop a pretty sick track that I know I've heard before but can't seem to quite recall the ID of. After that track's done, I head over to the edge of the tables area where some friends of EnigmaT's had gotten a table and was chilling with them, when the music stopped and the lights went on. The bouncers, start fanning through the club and making people leave, claiming that NYPD had just come in and asked them to close for the night. Now, as upset as I was about this, I wasn't about to get angry. I guess it's a part of life with NYPD being to hostile to the club scene these days, or perhaps it has to do with the inability of some people to keep their hands off of one another (I think you guys know exactly what I'm talking about, here). I actually talked to the friends of the Guido that got in the huge fight, and they said that some guy offended him in the club and that they'd been messing w/ eachother ever since that point. When they both got near the exit, apparently one of them hit the other, and a huge fight broke out with others participating as well. So a giant crew of officers showed up and were exchanging some angry words with the bouncers while outside... it got ugly enough that I quickly left with some people, and proceeded to wander about the city at about 4:30 in the morning. Of course, I doubt it helped that as we were going in a bunch of guys (some of them from Ireland) got caught drunk with fake IDs and were bitching at the cops. Got hauled away, I think... so maybe NYPD was extra watchful of Cro' tonight... who's to say? But the bottom line is that for the time I was there, I was having a blast (a statement that probably applies to most of the crowd, maybe with the exception of the guy that started that fight).
That brings me onto the last order of business: the crowd. At first a bit packed out in front with guys, but later it evened out. Also, the crowd really seemed into the music, and there were few people out there that seemed to be there to show off/get drunk/ruin the party for others. Ran into about 4 different people that I know from my University (completely at random... what the ! I have class with you guys?!??!?!?), and chilled with some random people after the party when that ultimate icebreaker was used to me and by me, "Wow, what a bunch of s, they shut down our party!". People wanted to stay till at least 6 and hear Green Velvet spin... I'd actually wager that most of the people there were looking forward to a 12pm end-time, close to last year's 10am + Afterhours Morillo+Tenaglia extravaganza. But that said, I think tonight's music was better, and the crowd knew just what they wanted and loved the DJs for bringing it to them.
Overall:
Mixin' Marc - Great buildup, great opener!
Benny Benassi - Phenomenal tracklist (a lot of straight underground tracks that I didn't think I'd ever hear in a club in New York) and very smoothe mixing; Absolutely crazy first act... he knows what he's doing!
Felix da Housecat - Weird tracklist, a bit too non-EDM for my tastes, but still managed to rock it hard. While this guy keeps 20 people on the stage with him and absolutely rocks out, you can't deny his ability to control the crowd like it was plugged into his mixer. Start-Stop-Start-Stop-Smooth-Hard... he can move people like an EDM prophet.
Green Velvet - Great first track --- was hoping to hear the whole set, as I was in the mood for a bit more prog and some trance (not just the fast house that the other two were playing). But I guess it can't be helped, with NYPD and all... I just hope someone in the press/media (or even politics) takes a stand for clublife, as it's an essential portion of urban existance, and EDM pumps blood into the veins of any real metropolitan party-goer... house... is a feeling...
The Crowd - Good mix of people, a lot of fun to hang out with and talk to afterwards. |

What about the two DJ's in the Reed or Red Room?
DJ Nate campbell DJ Franco Munoz
I keep looking for something about this party and them? They were sick. And kept the room packed and dancing until the club closed! I would say thats good being as how there were huge DJ's in the next room.
If anyone finds anything let me know please :) |

will you please stfu and go away - the "wtf?" was clearly in response to your reviving a three-month old for no good reason. since you're swinging from the nutsacks of unknown djs a bit too eagerly, we can only assume that you are either one of the djs or know them personally.
run along. |
