Jazz Mutant Releases Lemur Controller
Saturday, July 16, 2005

Jazz Mutant LemurJazz Mutant, a French company that designs interfaces for audio applications, has released the Lemur, an innovative audio control touch-surface.

Lemur can be used as: a live performance instrument to play OSC compatible virtual synthesizer (Max/MSP/Jitter, Reaktor and Traktor, audiomulch, Sonasphere, Pure Data, SuperCollider, etc.); a DJ, VJ and Light Jockey modular deck; an intuitive tool to control DSP plugins and virtual instruments; and other music, video and sound processes.

The Lemur includes a built-in100 BaseT Lan interface which can be directly linked to the host computer ethernet port. The protocol used to exchange data is OpenSoundControl (OSC). Compare to MIDI, OSC is much more efficient, convenient and reliable. Among other advantages, OSC has the following features : 32-bits precision, no additional hardware interface, no latency, simple specification and easy setup. At last, several LEMUR and computers can be linked together using a basic hub.

OMG. Had a chance to around with one of these last night... JESUS.

Heh, that's pretty cool. The $2500 US is steep but, when you think about it, probably worth it since it's a lot more compact than something like a Mackie Universal but at the same time looks like it can probably do a lot more.

Too bad it's from Fwance. ;)

The possibilities with this are absolutely ENDLESS. Like its ridiculous. You can use any of the built in patches, make your own controllers, use the "ball" interfaces in a crazy way. You can even have multiple screens with different interfaces and switch between them.

About those "ball" interfaces - are you supposed to drag those with your finger? And if you have a few balls close together, how good is the interface at picking up the right one? (Touch screens tend to be imprecise a lot of the time). The site also says that "brightness" is a parameter - how does one control that?

There is a control panel which is acesible through the screen itself (one of the top buttons)

As for tracking, we had 3 peoples fingers on there dragging around like 20 balls and it was very very very accurate. it also has crazy gravity controlled and friction adjustments on the balls so they keep bouncing around. Its a whole different sort of touch screen than anything you find regularly today- this is #1 on my list of wants for SURE.

Using the knobs takes a little getting used to, but faders were ing perfect- and you can set them up in a variety of different ways so you have to either drag up the fader or you can touch it and it will go to the point you pick directly.

Vid+SOund is a great way to use it for sure, don't know the logistics of that but it could be massive-

It's really insane live and in the studio. i'd say its the best thing out there at the moment
