Why do humans feel the need to ask mundane questions like, "How's it going?" when they don't give a ? And why to people respond in kind like, for instance, "Not bad for a Monday!" *fake laughter*

i was thinkig about this the other day. The lady at the gym reception desk asked me "how are you!" when I swiped in, and I answered with the usual "fine, and yourself". But I wondered to myself, would she have bothered to ask me follow up questions had I answered "I feel like " or just stared at me like :wtf:

dude. that's actually something i feel very strongly about. no wonder people think i'm shy or socially awkward at work... it's because i don't talk unless i have something worthwhile to say. sometimes i wonder how someone would respond when they ask me "hey Myra how's it goin?"! as i'm walking by them on the way to get coffee, and i reply with "ing terrible"...

same thing with phoning people. i never call people unless i have a good reason to. i never think to myself "oh i'll just call up so-and-so for some random chit-chat."

enjoy the silence...

That's too easy :p

Here's a couple of reaserch papers I've done on easy subjects;

- socially defined gender identity, hyper-sexualization of society (or in other words, why men are pressured to be super-macho and women are pressured to be submissive whores though media image and modelling) (in mine I used examples from the WWF for both genders)

- news propaganda and it's effect on cultivating fear (I did mine on fox news and CNN and conservative ideology)

- army training and resocialization (basicly, how ordinary people are transformed into killing machines through their social environment) (you can also do it on prisons, it's a similar phenomenon)

and my favorite;

- the relationship between music and society (I did mine on gangsta rap :p )

good ideas! thanks for the input, Aquarian. :)

and yeah, you're right - it's too easy 'cause it's SOC 101. i'm just finding certain things to be more difficult than they really are since i haven't been in school for a long time now and i'm not accustomed to thinking academically.

thanks for the ideas everyone! i gotta run to class now but i'll be back on later to check this thread before i write my paper later tonite.

I still think you should do it on the "bling bling" emphasis on African American youth culture in America.

Easy paper...
