always wondering how do tiesto and others get that nice compressed sound like in classic "silence" do they get their compressors at the master or do they compress each part individualy ?...

compression is used in both of the stages mixing and mastering...

the problem is...it takes a lot to get it right...because two compressors don't add they multiply!

say you have a vocal recorded with a compressor setting 2:1, then when mixing you compress 7:1 (I know it's drastic, just a good example for math) and then mastering will do another 2:1

so 2 x 7 x 2 - 28:1 how drastic compression that is you can easily try...

now...getting the "right sweet spot sound" is matter of experience and lots of learning...mostly from trial and error...good luck.
